When I see a rough sketch like this and I already know how cool it's gonna become. How can you start it so rough and make it look so epic eventually!!

it's absolutely helpful!!!
but it's really hard to catch the basic shape in black and white at the first
and how to color it is the most difficult part too T_T
you are awesome!

Great step by step, i would like to know more about the brush settings though

AlexRuizArt In reply to Onikaizer [2007-05-08 18:10:29 +0000 UTC]

I either set the brush to 'texture', but most of the time I use basic brushes, and overlay textures over the entire image.

Wow. Just wow. Very impressive. I like the way you seem to have captured the mood, composition and colours similar in style to the film. Nice body anatomy too. Looks like his bronze essence would strike fear in anyone who dares to come near him!

Absolutely impressive tutorial! Just two questions I have left: When you say "colour wash usually on a colour layer", do you mean just a "normal" layer where you paint your colours on or a layer that is set to "colour" mode?
And, if I may ask, which brush did you use for that paintery texture that first appears in panel 4 of your tutorial? I've seen it in many digital paintings already but haven't yet figured out how to set it up in Photoshop or where to get it.
Do you use custom brushes or only those that ship with Photoshop?

AlexRuizArt In reply to Frostfeuer [2007-04-03 19:52:04 +0000 UTC]

thanks mate! So as far as color wash, I mean a transparent 'glaze', if you will, over the sketch. The point is that you don't lose your drawing, or the values you've set up. So that layer can be set to multiply, overlay, or color...it varies from piece to piece. And as far as texture, the brushes is photoshop have a texture option to them, so you can actually paint with texture....just click on the option.....I also make my own brushes, but for this piece, they were all standard ps brushes....good luck!

Frostfeuer In reply to AlexRuizArt [2007-04-04 06:34:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot for the reply! I tried to set up a similar texture for my brush, but all I see are patterns like rocks, clouds or fabric. Maybe texture was the wrong word. I mean the brush that you added in step 4 of your tutorial which looks like 6 to 7 small thin lines that run parallel to each other. You used it on the Spartan's chest and biceps and on the crest of his helmet for example.
Would you mind instructing me on how to make the settings for this brush? I'd be so grateful.

oh, I think you're talkinga about the rake brush....google that and look on 'Daarken's site for brushes too....I think that's how I got it. I only use that sparingly, as it screams DIGITAL!

Frostfeuer In reply to AlexRuizArt [2007-04-05 06:21:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
You're right, the brush screams digital, but why not use the advantages of digital programs... as long as there aren't glows and lens flares on every picture.
Never been to Daarken's site. That guy is amazing. You really helped me a lot with that information.

Thanks alot for this m8, really makes it seem logical and straightfoward...(though I've yet to convince myself that making such awesome stuff actually is...)

anways, great work m8! Really appreciate these tuts. I guess one sort of basic question is how you work with brushes: mostly hard round? Am I seeing a bit of nicely controlled dodging in there too? What about opacity stuff...linked to pen?...just a few questions in case you ever...uh...get bored? hehe

thanks m8, great work!

AlexRuizArt In reply to Soverign [2007-03-21 17:41:55 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like it As far as brushes, I use all sorts; hard, soft, textured, rake. I always have the brushes set to pen pressure opacity, but overall, it really doesn't matter what you use in the end, as long as your forms, values, and lighting are believable...good luck!

impressive, but i think there's a little conceptual error... Leonida wasnt a king, was a commander, if u want. The figure of the king was disappointed at that time, considering the equation kingersians

so i'd change the last phrase if i were u

AlexRuizArt In reply to cruelyuchi [2007-03-19 20:30:31 +0000 UTC]

thanks for the comment! I know there is so much criticism of this movie, but the makers never based it on true history, just Frank Millers novel....but whether or not he was really king( some sources claim he was), within the confines of the movie, he is 'King Leonidas'.....and so shall be my concept sketch

in the movie '300' he was referred to as KING leonidas.

there is very little in that film that is actually historically accurate, btw.

cruelyuchi In reply to rissbutts [2007-03-19 16:38:01 +0000 UTC]

techically he was a king, but we use the same word for king (persian one) and spartan leader (for the hole sparta). But in ancient greek they used basileus for persian's one and something different (that i dont remember XD) for sprtans XD

Oh, do not think of this like sure... I'd ask to my greek teacher.
