Description Being a big fan of cartography I wanted to make "universe map" for my Senya map project.  This ended up taking a lot longer to make but it was a lot of fun.  I added a brief write up of each faction and Royal house to explain a bit about their status and back story.  At some point I would like to deign a few characters from the various areas to show their dress and appearance, but for now this might be interesting to Senya fans who want some more information.  Side note, some of the names could change if I discover they are already used in some other sci-fi.
Another note: now updated to include Emma's home world of Hanarra.

Very sneaky.  I am sure the Alorians would also separate the conscripted subjects so that no one had any friends or family in their legions.
Then they would break them down and build them back up again, as ruthless soldiers of the Empire!

I'm sure you're right. Maybe the Alorian royals use overlapping jurisdictions and chains of command like the Nazis to ensure nobody can form an alliance against them. Works great to ensure power, but protect the realm if a real, organized opponent crops up? Not so much!

The Chinese definitely do, or did. I remember doing some research on Tiananmen Square once and discovered that the Chinese officials directing the military called in troops from another area over because the local forces weren't doing what they wanted. That's why the protest was allowed to go on as long as it had and they were able to be as bold as they were before it was just ended when the outsider troops came in.

Well, these no good ALorians have been at it for centuries, so they have controlling societies down to a science!
Plus they are not SO bad... they have a Pax Romana thing going on, so the ruled society get to live in peace and relative comfort as long as they don't mind wearing the shiny grey suits for a few years.

Ahh, that's good. This story would get real boring real fast if the troopers could mess with Senya's shenanigans! Glad to hear that's not the case.
Yeah, I noticed that last detail! The Imperials certainly took the 'divide and conquer' lesson really well! Probably from the actual British Empire, who stole the idea from the Iroquois (The story behind the policy is really cool!).

Thanks for taking the time to answer all my stupid questions!

Yes... spanking is quite taboo.. and is something a higher status person could to to show their dominance over a lower status.
That is why Senya spanking the highborn Arian in the comic was so embarrassing for her!

As for slavery, it is highly illegal inside the empire, but the nobles get into all kinds of secret mischief in their pleasure places.
They have to venture out into Triad space (to the secret black markets) to do their illegal business. The Senya comic tales place on one of these worlds.

First I have to block in the basic details a bit more, but then I think it would be cool to get some different influences and ideas on the design and history of the place.

'Just woke up.
Lots of new things the colors helped stand out! : 3

I like that the Spire, a prison, is out in the darkness, almost like it's buoyed out there, to keep it away from the whole. Nice touch! : }

I wonder now, about the slipspace gates... could a ship or other weapon system fire INTO a portal and have it emerge on the other side, wherever the controllers have selected? That might be a more economical way to protect the Empire, at long distances, that fielding thousands of ships and millions of people.  Guarding a position in SPACE must be an impossible task... it'd have to be a sphere of death (for their economy haha)

Alexx-C In reply to RemnantComic [2016-07-10 07:11:00 +0000 UTC]

Firing lasers though a slip space gate? Why that is just madness, and not based on any kind of science I am aware of!
I do like the idea though, but for the storytelling purposes I am thinking only solid objects could pass though.  Both sides of the gate would also have to be controlled, and linked up for warp effect.  Some gates (such as the deep pass or the long jump) are riskier because of the chance of the link being broken, and the ship being stranded in deep space.

As far as the ships go, I have always thought the Pacific battles in WW2 were amazing, with fleets of battleships and carriers launching planes and torpedoes at each other.  It was like a 3d chess match in terms of ship formations and capturing island airstrips.  I think star wars based on that idea (with the star destroyers and waves of tie fighters).  Obviously they could have had more advanced weapons like long range rail guns or robot swarms... but nothing beats dog fights or battleship exchanging fire, in terms of excitement!

I need to peruse some of the latest issues of Popular Science and educate myself on slipspace rules! XD

Also, the idea of the Empire being reliant on people is definitely cool! : 3 But I still bet they get SOME help from their advanced technology...

Yes! I want to make one system in charge of droid production!! Also, maybe some older versions of the droid that look worse... like old gameboys.
I can see larger versions of them in space in the roll of sentries or fighter pilots too, plus doing all the difficult mundane jobs (on the central core systems).
The highborns like to have people doing these jobs as well, as a measure of control.  They also get off on bossing people around!

Re-forrested Earth? Bah! I always knew you were a hippie!

Very interesting breakdown for the factions. Is the Airforce still in development, or did you just run out of space?

Alexx-C In reply to Daemoria [2016-07-10 03:51:47 +0000 UTC]

Ha! It is not so much re-forested as it is destroyed.  The powers that be decided not to re-develop it (after some great war or catastrophe), but rather to let nature retake the ruins.
The world now serves as a sacred reserve, populated a religious order that maintain their temples and shrines.

Daemoria In reply to Alexx-C [2016-07-10 03:53:54 +0000 UTC]

Any chance Senya might be visiting erf any time? Maybe to steal some precious booty from a temple or a shrine maiden or two?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alexx-C In reply to Daemoria [2016-07-10 04:02:36 +0000 UTC]

I think that would be cool story!  Most of these places were just made as possible adventure sites!  like the Spire prison, or the vault, or the wild tribal systems controlled by the Red Hand.
I would love to get some help designing the ships and outfits of the various factions... I am sure you are super busy these days.

Side note: The Air Force is the same brach as the Navy, I suppose I should not have included them on that chart.  They are pilots that fly bombers, fighters and those hover bikes, but they launch from carrier ships.

Are there other human empires in this universe or maybe aliens? Just wondering who the rivals are the imperial navy guards against.

Alexx-C In reply to Palatin [2016-07-10 03:47:42 +0000 UTC]

So far I have only designed human races for all of these star systems, but there will be alien plants and animals.
The purpose of the Navy and Army is mostly to keep all of the planets and factions in line.  In essence, they are a giant police force to crush any kind of resistance or uprisings.

I love fantasy maps, and you've done a fine one here. It looks to me like the sort of map a traveler or outside observer would put together from various sources: thus, you could revise it if you come across new information. And I like the slip gate idea especially: Senya and her allies can't simply grab a starship and zip to safety because you've made travel a challenge.  Do those circles with dots in the middle represent the gates?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alexx-C In reply to scorpionlover42 [2016-07-10 03:45:33 +0000 UTC]

The circles are star systems, so each circle could have multiple inhabited planets, as well as space stations and slip space gates.
Some ships can warp on their own, but they have to he huge (and very expensive)!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scorpionlover42 In reply to Alexx-C [2016-07-10 13:27:18 +0000 UTC]

And those huge, expensive starships belong to the military, I'll bet; but maybe the royals like our favorite spanked highborn have luxury cabins reserved aboard the big cruisers and carriers? Why have your own ultra expensive star yacht when you can hitch a heavy-armed ride whenever you like?

I went on a tour aboard a big missile sub years ago, and had a terrific dinner; the galley served four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, dinner and 'middens,' which could be any meal you liked. A navy galley could feed a royal very well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alexx-C In reply to scorpionlover42 [2016-07-10 15:14:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes! I can see the royals having giant vessels with warp drives (and maybe even top secret cloaking technology).
They would not use the slip space corridors like filthy commoners!  They would also have teams of elite guards, as well as secret pleasure chambers fully stalked with servants to make sure the long voyages where enjoyable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scorpionlover42 In reply to Alexx-C [2016-07-10 17:13:02 +0000 UTC]

I see! Maybe flagships double as luxury transports for royalty; a cross between the Queen Mary and the Bismark. Naturally, the most advanced warships with the finest luxury appointments are reserved for royals. And those cabins are secret? Good idea.

A lowly crewmate gets a shock while crawling through a supercarrier's plumbing ducts to trace a leak. She goes through a service hatch and steps into a fragrant paradise. What?! A swimming pool? When did we get a pool? And a greenhouse?! Great Mother of All Stars, is that a man?!

Two grim Imperial guards approach. She smiles weakly...Oh, ah, hi...you've got a leak somewhere?
