Description
Another version of a reference (that wasn't supposed to be another version it was just a "Filly doesn't wanna post the same image from FA on here so lemme crop out some crap" thing) for !This was an African Wild Dog/Painted Dog adoptable I had for sale some time months ago. Kurais paid extra to get an additional image (that I did forever ago as well and never uploaded here) and a reference sheet. I don't really know why it took me 10 million years to slap this reference together since she only requested a template and no additional changes but somehow it did so I threw in 3 expressions for the wait! Which I... oddly fell in love with. I love this guy and am so happy he went to such a great owner. Him and his smiley face booty.
He was named Julian, a.k.a. Jewels, and he is a happy, exciteable fellow who enjoys pestering his friend Lumar, who he may have a little lovey-dovey crush on~ B3
He also occasionally gets mistaken for a lady and he's quite okay with that.

Aw he's a cutie! He does have a smiley face on his hiney, that's so cute xD Thank you for designing a pink African Wild Dog, they're excellent and we definitely need more of them with bright colors. You're so good at expressions agh dem teeth! It's hard to draw their mouths open and still make their face a consistent shape, or at least I find it hard. I would also like to lodge my appreciation for how you drew the tendons on his heels in the back view.

But thank you so much! I definitely wish there were more colorful African Wild Dogs too. They have such gorgeous colorings, it's a shame they are usually seen with just the normal natural tones. They tend to look so "samey" otherwise, and overly complex. I tried to keep this guy as simple as I could while still keeping the chaotic nature of their markings.
I know what you mean about the mouths though! I struggle with that sometimes too in terms of getting the snouts the right shape. I can do it fairly well if it's a basic angle, but if the heads are turned wonky it's a nightmare!

You're welcome you're welcome c: Haha I'm going to have to add technicolor AWDs to my never-ending list of things to draw eventually. I think it worked, he looks immediately like one without being super complicated.
Dern face angles :v Also it's hard to find useful references for things like that as well. Someone should make a face angles reference set for animals like they do for human expressions. If I think of it and can get my dogs to sit still I might try that actually.

I never put shadows behind chars on refs before, I usually do an outline, but it looked silly this time for some reason. Might try doing the drop shadow more often
