Description More concept work for my class and Boom and the Doomsday Debacle (I'm just officially calling it that now).

Played with a lot of stuff on these. I am not accustomed to forcing my environments to match my characters, and that was a big critique I got at the Comics Art Forum so I really wanted to practice it more. It's strange for me to have characters as simple and shape-heavy as these, so it was challenging applying the same to things like trees and clouds and... dirt. I still don't think it matches quite to my own satisfaction, but it's in the right direction and for that I'm pleased!

They aren't placed in any story-driven order. I just put the sketchy one on the bottom cause it's sketchier, though logically it would take place first.
No one likes Boom. Cocky little turd.

I have some progress shots of how I developed these on my Tumblr here: [LINK]

All the colors!
I quite like that one the more I look at it. Wish I had rendered it out a bit more cleanly but alas!

This is absolutely gorgeous concept art, and I LOVE the title for this project too!
All the dinosaurs, the colours, the backgrounds... are just amazing! Not to mention the IDEAS! This is such an original idea for a cartoon series, I would eagerly watch every episode of this if it was airing!
I have to say I really like your idea for a villain and his design, a more typical villain for a dinosaur show I would expect a large carnivore of some type, but this therizinosaurus (I know he's not exactly a therizinosaurus, I saw elsewhere you mention he was something related but from the North American continent to match the others) - ah, that's another thing, I LOVE the scientific accurate details you use with your characters!
The pitch is brilliant, this looks like it could be a great, beautiful and fun series to watch! ^^

AlfaFilly In reply to ZureLazuli [2017-02-24 06:58:20 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much ^^
Ahhh ya know I've had a bunch of people tell me they could see it as a cartoon ;n; If the comic pitch doesn't end up working out I'm definitely going to rework the pitch for animation! It's never a bad thing to have a solid pitch laying around just in case an opportunity arises ^^

And thank you for that compliment! I definitely didn't want to follow the "big bad carnivore" trope in this one. Nothronychus/Therizinosaurs are technically therapods, but definitely not carnivores, so I thought it was a decent twist. And they still can look just as scary with those claws!
An thank you as well about the accuracy part ;n; I'm no paleontologist by a longshot, but I wanted to at least attempt to get some of the basics right! Can't tell you how much searching I've done to get the right flora of this era XnX

ZureLazuli In reply to AlfaFilly [2017-02-26 17:55:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh sorry, I had assumed it was a cartoon pitch because of how cinematic these three pictures are! ^^ I think it would work equally well as both, I wish you the best of luck with your pitch, this work is definitely worth it!

Indeed, you did very good work there with Dingle looking very intimidating, the claws do work to look very threatening! I think he makes for brilliant villain!

Well, as a palaeontology student, I can tell you I highly appreciate all the little detail accuracy (flora included!) you went into with these designs! Kudos!

Thank ya kindly! Aha, the little dino with the leaf is so smol but so sweet.
I definitely hope I can, at minimum, post some previews of stuff! I won't upload any of the pages until after the contest I'm pitching it for is long over (sometime in June) BUT ALAS! It'll be worth it I hope!

TheWolvenEstates [2017-02-22 23:29:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow I absolutely love the use of scale and composition in these. The middle one is truly dynamic and the tones work well to create a sense of mood for the scene.
If I might suggest one thing?
For the top and bottom ones, I wonder if the feel of each picture could be heightened by swapping their pallets.
The top one is very cool and muted, while the scene and expressions feel as though there should be a hidden vibrancy to the night. The bottom one I think would do more to reflect the mood of the character if the surrounding pallet reflected his own in more muted, stormy tones then in the soft pastel vibrancy it currently is in.
Not saying this would make them better, though. Rather that I wonder if switching their pallets could be an interesting shift in the scenes.

Thank you so much! And absolutely, always feel free to suggest things, I'm open to them unless I say otherwise ^^
You make a good point! It might be interesting seeing a bit more vibrant green for the top and more subdued for the bottom. Might fiddle with it and see what happens!

Thank you! A couple people have told me if the comic pitch doesn't work out that I should definitely retool it as an animated series aha I just might! Never hurts to have pitches laying around for just the right moment.
