Hey!So I've decided to upload this unfinished manga-styled comic that I did earlier this year. It's an idea that was quite close to my heart at the time and that I needed to get off my chest. However, working it out and turning it into a short story took two months and during those two months my life transformed a lot (due to unrelated factors) and what happened was that before I was done I had lost all connection to it - I still felt the story, but while when I had started working on it I had this urge to get it out, two months later I really needed to leave it behind in the process of growing as a person. Now I look back at it and think how terribly sappy and emotional and cheesy it is, but I know how much it meant to me at some point, so I will share it for everybody who might currently be in a phase where they can connect to it.
The ending is slightly rushed and the whole thing is missing background inks and screentones, but all the core elements are there. So please read it if you're interested, and let me know what you think or if it induced some feels.

It's reads write-to-left, as is usual in "manga"/eastern comic style. If you're not talking about that, then I'm not sure what you mean...

It's... Really not worth getting all that riled up about, if you step back and think about it...
Hannes isn't the first to do this, and he won't be the last. The lines between cultures in all the the arts are merging, it's just another way to look at things.

I know you keep saying that they're "incomplete" but I think they're perfect the way they are. Sometimes colour and inking can drown out something that's already so good. I love how you draw people, your line art is wonderful.

Haha thanks Krissy! And I would NEVER work with these publishers. The way they treat their artists is reason enough to boycott them completely. If I'm ever going to do anything, it'll be crowdfunded and selfpublished.

Geez.
However, it all can be negotiated. If I were to draw manga I'd figure out how much I need to live, and calculate my page rate that way. If I could do 15 black-white pages per month, at 150-200ā¬/page, that's 2250-3000ā¬/month before taxes, enough to live comfortably.
(but I don't do comics, because my usual drawing style is much, much too detailed and complex AND COLORFUL and PAINTED, it would cost waaaay more than that ;_; I honestly wonder how some graphic novel artists make a living!)
I'd say, a mangaka who earns less than 1ā¬/hour needs to renegotiate (ALL contracts can be negotiated!) or simply not do it. We have more power than we think.

There is a few people who can make a living off it for sure, but they don't exactly make it to the top tax bracket. And 15 black/white pages a month without assistants is suicidal O_O At least if you really want to give them some loving. I worked on this thing for two months and barely managed to ink 28 pages. No screens, no backgrounds, with the story written in advance. I might not be the fastest artist, but I'm not the slowest either. You should try it though! Take a month off, do a personal short story and then tell me about the data you collected <3
