Well, I've been on spring break so I decided to make a giant robot yesterday (everyone loves giant robots right? ) and this is what I came up with.

His head is the only thing I'm really not finished with (as you can see I just stuck a block there so you can see where his head will roughly be placed).

About the robot:
Capacity: 1 person pilots this machine
Weapons: one superconductor Rail Gun is in each arm and a gattling gun mount will be in the head
Size: About as tall as a 3 or 4 story building (not quite sure yet )

The concept is basically of a walking battle ship, capable of intercity combat. Utilizing roads and freeways when available for fast recons using it's two retractable wheels at the bases of it's legs (think of the freeway scene in the movie transformers, that's how it moves XD). The two huge superconductor rail guns are more powerful than those found on even the most advanced battle ships making it impractical for small conflicts, but ideal for destroying an entire enemy city. It is incredibly agile considering it's size, utilizing a combination of hydraulic pistons and synthetic muscles, making it quick enough to evade most physical attacks but powerful enough to knock through buildings with reinforced concrete and steel beams.

That be strange to see in a movie or a video game.

If you can, come check out my gallery. [link]

Great detailed modeling and concept man. Always like these occlusion pass style renders too, they look nice for just about anything and really highlight the form.

Thanks! yeah occlusion is great and it saves a lot of time creating a custom shader.

It looks like something from transformers. Awesome.

Thanks! it doesn't actually transform into anything... But maybe it should *ponders*....

It seems that you tried to strike the ultimate balance between all possible extremes: heavy artillery, fast-response, heavy tactical assault, & maybe a bit of recon, considering its speed, transforming ability, & relatively small size for a spaceship. The only thing missing is stealth, but then we start getting insanely overtwinked.

A couple of armament suggestions, if you don't mind:

HC (Hardened Circuit) protection: Making something this complex is quite obviously going to require a HUUUGE amount of highly advanced electrical/sensory/radar equipment. I shudder to think what the main guns alone will require, much less the conversion system & body coordination, among other things. It seems to me that a single well-placed EMP or electrical overload has immense potential to ruin this awesome mech. Since you've already spent a lot of time, effort, & money making this thing, you might as well go the whole nine yards & make it immune to such dirty tricks with the aforementioned HC shielding. (I got the idea from the Rifts Bionics Sourcebook).

Enegy Gatling Gun: You've already said that the main guns are going to be impractical for a wide variety of targets. To handle those, you might wish to make the head gun an energy gun to avoid that most annoying of problems: ammunition. If you combine it with the most advanced targeting & sensor systems possible, it could be a good defensive system, infinitely taking care of flanking/ambushing enemies independent of everything else. Top it off with a *very* fast rate of fire & a special fast-response turret neck (with a near-instant full 360* range in all directions), & it may very well be fully capable of handling everything from suppression fire to missile interception to back-up/support.

Leg Defense System: However fast the legs may be, they are still vulnerable to "nuisances" like mines & similar traps. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I also imagine a possible ambush: you are scouting through a city, & a whole bunch of specially-trained/equipped infantry open up on your legs from point-blank range, hiding inside the buildings to either side of you. At that point, it's nearly impossible to avoid the attacks. To counter all that, you may wish to include a leg weapon that would defend against those attacks. The thought that comes to mind is either an electrical discharge field, or a number of pods containing little bombs (think real-world cluster bombs), with a mixture of plasma napalm & high-explosive payloads. Hyper-velocity shrapnel & lava on steroids is not a good way to start a battle .

Now, with all that said & done:

I like it,/I love it,/I want some more of it!/I try,/so hard,/but I can't get enough of it!

XD

Having an energy gatling gun (what kind? LASER, plasma, particle beam?) woudn't solve his ammo problem, it would just sap power from the other systems. What it could do with would be some CIWS systems on it, to deal with pesky infantry, or little escort drones.

Considering the tech level necessary to make that 'Mech in the first place (& the 'Mech's sheer size), it would be child's play to fix that problem by installing a seperate energy source for the laser.

As for what kind, I'd go with a variable-frequency laser (long range, fast rate of fire, very nice energy used/power provided ratio, and capable of functioning at full efficiency in all environments against all targets).

Nice catch-I hadn't quite considered those questions until you brought it up

OMG!! My favorite response ever! ...you think just like I do lol

I'm definitely going to take those armament suggestions to heart when finishing up this mech, I especially like the energy gattling gun (it will be so much fun to make!). And not to mention all the possibilities for leg defenses
Thanks man, your awesome!

Awesome. I love ambient occlusion renders! I think it could use a few more iterations of smoothing on the arms, you can see the steppiness in a few places. And of course, nothing connects the head to the neck... other than that, great attention to detail in here.

Thanks! yeah aren't ambient occlusion renders great, took me like 2 hours to render these images though (I used fine trace mental ray). I'll work on the arm's smoothness a bit more thanks for the tip. And yeah the head is as I said the only thing I haven't really worked on yet, as of now it's just 3 squares ha ha... The finished version will have a complete head .
