Personal work based off of "2001: A Space Odyssey" by Stanley Kubrick
Thank you everyone on the CGsociety WIP boards for all the help!!
This painting depicts an astronaut being shown the destruction of his planet, Earth, after touching a monolith on a distant planet.
************Elaboration********
The means by which a form of intelligent life in this universe might contact another form of intelligent life in this universe are few and difficult given the vastness of space. The director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick, introduced me to the wonder of one of these possibilities in his film:
Self replicating cosmic burglar alarms that scatter themselves throughout the galaxy and become activated when some form of intelligent life is near or touches one. In Stanley Kubrick's film they are portrayed simply as Monoliths ([link] ).
In Kubrick's film, he postulates that alien intelligent life that is significantly advanced enough to send out these monoliths, would welcome our presence.
I postulate instead, that a species that is about to reach its "singularity" and progress into a new Epoch (read The Singularity Is Near by Raymond Kurzweil), such as humans, would, during this transition undoubtedly develop new and potentially destructive forms of technology we are incapable of even imagining yet. And, a species advanced enough to have passed safely through that epoch and through their own singularity would undoubtedly know its dangers and be significantly cautious enough to have avoided their own destruction.
And so, I imagine that such a cautious species that would have survived to build the monoliths, would understand that even if another species, human's for example have even a 1% chance of destroying themselves and their universe during a transition past their "singularity", it would be too great of a risk. So while Kubrickβs monoliths encourage life, mine are a little less forgiving and are instead built to destroy any form of intelligent life that might one day threaten the universe and it's established life. Not out of cruelty or hate, just caution.

A very similar concept is explored in Alistair Reynolds novel "Revelation Space" and its sequels "Redemption Ark" and "Absolution Gap." I actually found this piece while searching for fan art of the series. Great work btw, particuarly with the look of shock and horror on the astronaut's face.

now this story behind your painting shows to me the human intiative to want more and more as time progresses and undoubtedly leading to what you stated. absolutely love this!

Holy crap. Thats an immense amount of detail. Very nice work. I think its the work you put into the texture that really stands out. Also good colour choices.

The Arthur C. Clark story that movie was based on really stuck with me through the years, because I'd say just the notion of setting of a "cosmic burglar alarm" is more frightening than any face hugger or predator ever could be. Probably the single best example of that area of fiction where Sci fi and Horror blend together. There wouldn't even necessarily NEED to be any aliens in the story, the fear and chaos the notion would cause would make for good horror in itself.

Very nice painting-prehaps the explosion and the bit of earth that is visible should be the other way around-makes it clearer for anyone who doesn't recognise the earth.
I can't belive I missed this at CGS.

Thanks, I actually have no idea... I was working on it for an entire semester when I had a few minutes of free time from homework etc on the weekends... I doubt I could have just sat down and pushed it out in one sitting though.

the space suit... one question, is the material effect a texture or actual brush work?

Brush work I don't use any texture overlays in any of my pieces

oh my god, the details are amazing, the blur on the...thing looks really good and the textures are eyepopping. I've not gotten the hang on how to get textures to look good (at all) yet yours look so crisp. the thing I like the least is the guys face (if I have to say something more critique-ish), he looks a little 'over the top' and not on par with the rest of the artwork. I also feel it might have been 'moodier' if you couldn't see the face and maybe just reflections of the helm...glass (visir/visor?).
