Yamabushi monks wear a small hat on their foreheads, it also serves as a drinking cup.

oAo This is amazing! <3 What types of sculpty did you use to get the different colors? Or is it painted that way? Either way, the monochromatic look is really nice! <3 And the detail in the clothes and features.... amazing!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AliasGhost In reply to Free-Falling [2010-08-12 00:33:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I appreciate that. I use a mix of regular pink Super Sculpey and black Sculpey III to get the gray and the green is Castilene wax, he actually isn't finished in these shots as his final form will be resin which can be painted.

Is wax really hard to work with? I've never used it as a medium.

<3 Again, this is steller work!

AliasGhost In reply to Free-Falling [2010-08-12 04:09:10 +0000 UTC]

There's a learning curve with wax and I'm still getting used to it, you have to keep it warm and it helps to have a proper 'wax pen' or 'waxer' a tool I still lack.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Free-Falling In reply to AliasGhost [2010-08-12 20:31:08 +0000 UTC]

Is it really brittle? o.o" Or is it a different kind of wax for sculpting than things like candle wax? I'm sorry if I'm pestering, I really don't know.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AliasGhost In reply to Free-Falling [2010-08-13 04:31:26 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem at all. Castilene wax is more or less a toy industry thing and it is a bit more solid than candle wax, it also comes in three grades of hardness (I use medium and hard). Being that it is a wax however it doesn't really require an armature and holds detail exceedingly well, hence the reason I use it for accessories.

thanks for the explanation, I knew nothing about Tengu, I originally just thought it might be a character from a comic (don't hate me! ) but wonderful work all round, especially the variety of textures and the pose and balance of the piece.

Whitey594 [2009-03-20 18:01:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes yes FUCKING YES!! This came out more awesome than I was hoping it would be. Your skill at sculpting muscle is more than I could ever do And his pants are great as well. Just one question, why'd you use castilene for the wings? is it lighter than Sculpey?
And just one more thing, I personally would've liked if his wings were a bit bigger, they seem a little small for his body, but they still look great

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AliasGhost In reply to Whitey594 [2009-03-21 02:31:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks brother, yeah the Castilene is lighter and doesn't require an armature, I don't want to say it would be impossible in Sculpey but I would have to had built them out section by section and bake in between to do them correctly in Sculpey.

Bigger wings? Who are you, George Lucas? Actually I had contemplated making them smaller as I was referencing some old Wood Block art on them.

Whitey594 In reply to AliasGhost [2009-03-21 17:11:45 +0000 UTC]

Haha..I guess I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to Tengu wings then

AliasGhost In reply to Whitey594 [2009-03-21 18:17:24 +0000 UTC]

LOL, sure you do, there are plenty of Tengu with bigass wings, I just chose some reference that had smaller wings.

Whitey594 In reply to AliasGhost [2009-03-21 19:35:03 +0000 UTC]

oooooookay then And do you plan on painting this one? I think a paint job is almost required on this

AliasGhost In reply to Whitey594 [2009-03-21 19:49:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah,I'm actually going to cast him and KIT him. Once all that crap is done and if I don't hate him by then I will probably paint a couple.

Scott, this is absolutely amazing! I've loved watching the progress as you've developed him more and more!
The detail is great! I am blown away by those wings.. I remember you saying how difficult they were going to be, but now all your hard work has paid off! They look fabulous!
Well done, Scott! It's a wonderful piece!
