Description Finally got this one onto paper: an artistic representation of one of my favorite books of all time, Diana Wynne Jones' Fire and Hemlock. Amazing book. Best damn Tam Lin retelling there is.

(Left to right: Tom, Polly and Laurel--Tom looks a little funny, but Polly is just as I meant her to be, and Laurel looks pretty damn Evil Fairy-scary, so...yeah.)

I am so incredibly satisfied with this.

Now I just have to finish up finals, and life will be wonderful again. Oh, and I just bought Kelly Link's new short story collection plus Holy Blood, Holy Grail so things are really beginning to look sweeeeet.

"She had na pu'd a double rose,
A rose but only twa,
Till upon then started young Tam Lin,
Says, Lady, thou's pu nae mae."

(resp.:
She'd not pulled a double rose,
a rose but only two
When up then came young Tam Lin
says: "Lady pull no more")

sort of what I thought when I saw all the roses

Great picture! Totally love your style!!

Oh! This is just right! What a wonderful illustration of the story. Polly looks perrrrfect. I love that she's holding a rose and (what I think is) some of her story writing. I didn't notice Laurel at first, she's so hidden in shadows! Lurking evilly, how appropriate! What do you draw/paint with? It looks great!

Hnnnng there isn't enough Fire and Hemlock fanart on dA and I love what you did here. Laurel >:I

Polly looks awesome, you did a beautiful job with this. <3 F&H is my all time favorite book and you did a great job with the characters.

This is one of my favorite books, and this is such lovely fanart of it! The coloring is so soft, and I really like your style--especially the places where you sort of break up planes like on her socks and the shadows of the vines? It's just really cool! What do you use to color, if you don't mind me asking?

Haha, yeah. My personal favorite is "Happiness isn't a thing. It's not something you go out and get. It's how you feel about things."

Have you read the rest of Diana Wynne Jones's stuff?

I saw this in someone else's favorites and had to swing by to see it.

It's very pretty. The coloring is just breath taking.

I haven't read anything be Diana Wynne Jones, but I've noticed that I've liked several pieces of fanart for her stuff that I've randomly come across on DA.

alidaART In reply to RevisionOfLines [2006-08-24 22:43:50 +0000 UTC]

She's brilliant. Do read her stuff. But most of all read Fire and Hemlock, because it really is her best book and one of my favorites of all time, period.

Feantauriel [2006-08-10 00:11:21 +0000 UTC]

oo this is nice! Fire and Hemlock is a great book, I agree

Have you read "An Earthly Knight" by Janet McNaughton? Wonderful, wonderful retelling of Tam Lin..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

alidaART In reply to Feantauriel [2006-08-11 20:36:35 +0000 UTC]

Mm, I've read An Earthly Knight. I liked it, just because it's Tam Lin and it's fairly well written, but Fire and Hemlock is still my favorite retelling, with Pamela Dean's Tam Lin a very close second (fabulous book, well written and entertaining if not a bit slow).

Cool, thanks Did you ever read the book? It's by the same author as Howl's Moving Castle, but darker in tone and about three times as complicated. But really good. One of my favorite books ever.

This is really great woman, It's like one of my favourite pieces from your gallery, you have such great control over the mediums that you work with. I especially like the way you made the reds stand out.

How long does it take you to do something like this? Its great~

So many thanks, m'dear And the control...just a lot of practice. A lot of heinous failures too XD.

This took...gah, days, between studying for finals and being up at two in the morning eating frozen grape juice (o_O).
