Description This is the design process of 2 different species of wild creatures from my world, Planet Dyploon, and they're part of the same project as the Alien Race and the Swamp House. Initially I was designing only one species by trying random things as seen on the first 3rd of this page, but from all those ideas I've noticed that most people liked 2 of them and because I wasn't able to chose one, I decided to go ahead and fully design both of them.

The first chosen species is the one that looks like an isopod with some sort of fan-like bony organ on the back. The intention with this one was to make an herbivorous looking species, that doesn't move very fast, but relies on this large bit on their backs for protection, intimidation with bright coloration and mating rituals. This body part was supposed to be spiky, edgy or generally look unapproachable, but at the same time the coloration should not only have a shock factor, but also a beauty/health indicator. So that's why I chose the iteration with the multiple blades making a fan and 2 pairs of holes, because I wanted to use the holes to make some eye-imitation, like giant fake eyes on the back of this creature, to look scary, but both these and the blades would also be a sign of health and attractiveness in males. Only the males would have this entire body part, so I decided for the general deign to include it, while the females would just be a wormy body and more earthy colors.

The second species designed in this process is the one that I was initially trying to achieve, which is a wild predatory species from the Swamp biome. These creatures are scary and fierce looking, I based them mostly on mosquitos, not only because of the connection to blood, but also because it would make sense for a mosquito-like creature to live in a wetland. For this design I wasn't sure if I wanted wings, I tried horns and even an earwig back (which I actually liked), but in the end I went with a curled sting tail and insect-like feet curled backwards, because that was a bit weird, but it had a more similar anatomy to the humanoid race, showing some sort of common ancestry. I tried a variety of colors for both these creatures and he chosen palettes were the orange one for the isopod species and the green/red feet one for the predator.

Soon I will post a 3D model that I've made for the predatory creature.
