Description
“Is this snake highly venomous” and “is this snake dangerous” and “will this snake bite me” are very different questions.
And to be clear, I don’t want to do snakes dirty here! Snakes are fascinating and an important part of the environment. The vast majority, venomous or not, will only bite if they truly have no other choice. The high toll throughout the Indian subcontinent is largely an issue of rural medical access and anti-venom specificity and shelf-life.

I work with snakes in an educational setting, and I get asked these sort of questions a lot! Thank you for discussing this in regards to behaviour, not just venom potency, as it plays such a huge role in the frequency/lack of snake bites.
Very informative as always

I did read that a lot of bites in India happen when snakes slither into peoples bedding, as it is warm. Then snake is startled when human moves in the bed... it wasn't a certain source though.

The GIGANTIC population of India doesn't help either. You got waaaay more feet on the ground which makes it more possible for a snake attack.
The snakes don't have much elbow room compared to this overcrowding of the country.
