[CHARACTER CHANGE - GO!]

Hello out there. My name is Dr. Andrews and I will be taking your questions about this marvelous creature. To start, I'll tell you a little about what's going on in our lab today.

Three weeks ago, my team was out on a dive looking for fossils when they heard a strange animal call. It sounded much like a whale, except whales do not have the ability to create the range of pitches my team was hearing. It was almost as if the creature was singing. After sending down two more teams, they found this massive beast trapped under what looked to be some fallen rocks. Her mate, who was a good three or four meters shorter, was already crushed by another rock nearby. It was nothing we'd ever seen before, so we rushed to free her and brought her back to the labrotory. Strangely enough, she didn't struggle (which is good, seeing as she probably has the strength to crush any unprotected human).

We were perplexed as to what this could be. Finally, we all admitted that there was no other explination - we had found a mermaid.

Today, you can see our team of specialists analyzing her reactions and habits. On a whim, we've even had Dr. Jerriene come in. She trains Gorrillas to communicate using sign language and pictures. So far, the creature seems to be doing well and is cooperating wonderfully.

Frequently Asked Questions -

Q: Why do you have her in such a small space?! Animals shouldn't be cooped up like that!
A: When we first brought her here we had her in a MUCH larger tank, but she actually began showing signs of anxiety and stuck to the corners and crevices. We've learned that they feel safer in smaller spaces.

Q: She looks so human like. How is this possible?
A: We're still debating about that. Our hypothesis is that her anscestors were the same ones that lead to the modern day humans. A good example of what we think happened is along the lines of the whales - Whales actually evolved to go on land, then for whatever reason, they went back to the water. This may have happened with a branch of the early humans.

Q: She's HUMUNGOUS. How in the world did she get so big?
A: Again, we don't know anything for sure. Our closest guess is the Goldfish Theory. A goldfish's size is proportional to their environment and their population. Since we've never seen one of these before, we can assume their population is very small, and with the whole ocean to live in, they grew to be very large. Their size is also probably a defense measure against predators that would normally be able to hunt human-sized prey.

We think it may serve as a form of attracting a mate, but since she's the only one we've been able to observe, we can't be sure. It could also be that she just hasn't evolved far enough for the human hair-growth patterns to dissapear from their gene pool.

She has some cat features on her, do you know if she has cat genes in her.

It looks that way, but the features that make her seem "cat-like" are the flat nose and the slit pupils - both of which are useful adaptations in many environments. The slit eyes allow for sight in the dark depths where they live. The flat nose seems to help keep dust out of her nostrils when she's digging around in fine sediment for food.

How aware is she of herself, her surroundings, and her situation?

She's under the impression that she's training us actually. It's rather amusing to watch when she get's flustered with one of us for not understanding what she wants right away. Although gentle, she has a wide range of expression much like ours.

She's a bit skittish if we have lights on outside the tank, because then she can see all of the lab equipment. This goes back to her liking smaller spaces. As far as how aware she is of her "situation", she seems to be taking the exercises like a dog reacts to being trained with a clicker: it just becomes a part of the day.

Was she an accidental discovery like they were out looking for a giant squid and happened upon her a.k.a something way better or did they find evidence that she was real and set out to hunt her down?

The team was out looking for new fossils when we heard a strange set of vocal calls. When we set out to find their source, we stumbled across this creature who had been trapped under a fallen rock along with her mate who was already dead by the time we pulled him out.

Is she warm blooded or cold blooded? Has her DNA been analyzed yet? Why was her mate smaller than her?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Allegro-Designs In reply to GymnastMagic [2012-05-23 23:20:36 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, DNA testing can take (on average) five to six weeks, so we're still waiting on some DNA samples. On the blood issue, she is warm blooded, though her body temperature is about 10 degrees cooler when she's in a neutral state. As for her mate, many species show the female as being larger. In this case, from what we could see from her mate's body, the males are more agile, as well as equipped with more jaw muscles. His bit power equates to that of a bull mastif dog.

What's her name? I suggest Aristides.

Well her tentative scientific name put before the jury is "Pseudosapien Aquideus", but no one's given her a nickname yet.
