It should be well noted that Toho and Tristar held a press conference while attempting to secure the rights to Godzilla so that they’ll make the very first American film starring the G man.

Patrick Tatopoulos was hired as the creature designer with some help from Roland Emmerich who wanted his Godzilla to be lean, fast, and realistic. Toho’s reaction left them silent and unimpressed with what they made and had no other choice to accept it as the final design in order to get the film finished in time. Stan Winston was the original creature designer and actually made a design identical to the Big G which Toho actually loved but was sadly scrapped due to timing and budget concerns with the original director, Jan De Bont.

I’m not hating on the design myself but when you compare it to Stan’s version, it’s disappointing and all the hate really should go to Roland Emmerich who just wanted to make this movie to get a huge paycheck instead of actually caring about Godzilla.
