Surprise! It’s Supercharged Gfantis!
There’s a bit more to this than being a Trendmasters-inspired take on the G-Fest mascot, so gather ‘round, kiddies.
For the folks unaware, I drew the Godzilla’s Revenge inspired design for this year’s convention shirts. After Matt Frank himself (who has done a few of the designs in the past) handed the torch to me, I was flabbergasted, and I had that same nervousness I had when I first started doing Artist Alley in 2010. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if J.D. Lees (the man in charge of the show) was going to provide the idea to me, or if he wanted me to pitch an idea or two for the design. We know how that played out, of course, but…well, I needed to psych myself up for the gig, so I got to sketchin’ and colorin’.
This year also marks the 25th anniversary of when Trendmasters first rolled out their Godzilla toys. But to apply that to Gfantis, I recall one year seeing a custom figure of him made from a Shogun Warriors Godzilla (along with a faux commercial to advertise it!). I thought of trying the same thing, but have him made from a Trendmasters figure. And with his muscular physique, I also wanted to convey a sense of “still going strong”, since last year was the convention’s Big 25th; just because we crossed a milestone is no reason to slack, so let’s keep that enthusiasm going!
Alas, the Godzilla’s Revenge idea was already set in stone right off the bat, so naturally there was no need to pitch this concept. But looking at it once again, I really didn’t want this to go to waste. I figured it’d make for a good print! Not to mention this’ll be my tenth year in a row as an Artist Alley member, it’s about time I did some Gfantis fanart anyway.
