Ren’s past life wanted to marry Sora literally since the day he met her , when he finally did, he promised her they’d start a family after the war against Malefor ended, but then she was murdered in front of him.

That “gut feeling” Ren described is actually his past self’s real feelings, which returned the moment he acknowledged that he had developed feeling for Sora (again). In fact, his desire to fulfill his promise of raising a family with her was the only reason he ignored Spyro’s warning about “Freaky Light” and agreed to work for her, and why he could develop feelings for Sora in the present.
