Description
Saturn
saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and second largest in the solar system. it is named after the roman god of agriculture, justice and strength. its alternative name is the greek god chronus. saturn is the furthest planet from the sun still visible with the naked eye. it would appear as a moderately bright, cream coloured star in the sky and with the use of a small telescope, one can view its striking and distinctive rings that make it unique amongst the gas giant planets. the planet itself is pale and dull with very faint bands compared to the dynamic and colourful ones seen on its close neighbour, jupiter. however, saturn's calm and dull appearance is misleading, as below the cloud tops, winds roar, lightning crashes and storms rage in an everlasting layer of chaos. this is probably due to saturn's interior radiating twice as much heat as it recieves from the sun. this weather is also fueled by the planet's rapid rotation completeling one day in just 10.5 earth hours, the second shortest day of all the planets after jupiter.
saturn has 62 known moons of which most are small, irregular, potato-shaped asteroids a few kilometers across. other moons are large enough to pull themselves into spherical bodies like: titan, rhea, dione, tethys, enceladus, mimas, iapetus and others. all of the large moons of saturn are tidally locked to the planet.
titan is noticebly saturn's largest moon, comprising 90% of the mass in orbit around the planet including the rings. it is the second largest moon in the solar system after jupiter's moon ganymede and it is even bigger than the planet mercury. it orbits on the same plane of the planet's rings just like most of the other major moons, and so the rings would appear edge on from titan. titan is also the only moon in the solar system with a large dense atmosphere, and it is this atmosphere that gives the moon its orange puffy appearance, and hides its surface, similar to that of the planet venus. titan's atmosphere has a very similar composition to that of early earth's, meaning it is possible that the moon is currently in the process of forming life capable of living in the different chemistry and conditions on its surface.
enceladus is the sixth largest moon of saturn and also the brightest body in the solar system, reflecting nearly 100% of the light that falls on its surface. the moon has a region near its southern pole called the tiger stripes. here, huge geysers spew large quantities of frozen salt water from the moons sub surface ocean, said to harbor at least microbial life. this frozen water constantly replenishes one of saturns rings and retains it. there has been talk to send a probe to the moon in the future to investigate the sub surface ocean for life. because of this ocean, the moon is said to be similar to jupiter's moon europa, which also has a sub surface ocean under its ice sheets and probably life in it as well.
iapetus is the third largest and furthest of the large moons of saturn and is also a strange world itself. its orbit is highly inclined from the plane of the rings, making the moon orbit closer to the plane of saturn's orbit. this gives the moon beautiful views of the planet, its rings and the other moons from different points along its orbit. the moon has a huge range of mountains stretching around its equator that seperates its northern and southern hemispheres. the half of the moon pointing in the direction of its orbital motion, is covered in a dark fine dust and the trailing half isn't, exposing the moon's bright icy surface. this makes the moon appear to be a dark rocky world and a bright icy world combined.

Alpha your work just keeps getting better and better.
This is really amazing. Once again my favorite part of your planets are their atmospheres. It ads so much to the art. I can also see that you have improved on your shadowing. It seams as if you cracked the ring shadowing trick you were asking about when i first signed up on DA. Well done. I have seen real improvement on your space scenes your using great balance with your main subject and the background. Though on this piece i feel you could have used a tad more stars to give it a little more depth to the image.
Your improving very quickly, giving more thought and concentration to your art, keep at it.

thanks very much for the critque, its really appreciated! and with your help, i perfected the ring shadow technique so that it comes out looking at least 80% realistic!
i'll try to make a tutorial so others could learn how to do it to!
so thanks for the help! and your right, the background could use a little more depth, i'll see what i could do!
