i recommend downloading to see all detail. also, large file size, sorry if it takes long.

made another one. definitely not pleased with the outcome. not sure what it is about it, but it just doesn't look right. it looks artificial for some reason. planet made the exact same way as the last one, but different land forms and clouds.  not sure what's wrong with the planet though as i can't seem to find the thing making it look 'fake'. i also used a different reference image of earth taken with a different camera to make this one, so it's colours would be more in line with that image than the last test.

went for a different phase angle on this one so the star is more to the left of us. also we are looking more at the planet's north polar region.
i will be doing a half-lit and crescent-lit test as well, so look for them. i want to get as many angles as possible.
also i managed to get a good angle that captured a bit more desert (well due to the shape of the land masses, the planet just has more desert regions anyways).

made the clouds a little bit more natural in this one like i said i would do. but i think they lack some structure and appear more as just isolated clouds (this one gave me a bit more trouble to brush, and i started getting a little anxious to just finish it). in the planet cloud texture itself i tried something that i didn't do in the last test. i tried to add detail and shadows cast by the top of clouds near the terminator (kinda helps the clouds look a bit more 3D rather than just being another flat texture, which is a prominent effect in side and crescent shots of earth). added a bit more noise to the clouds as well to help break up the smoothness of the texture.

if i had to place my guess on what's making it look so unnatural it would most likely be the atmosphere and shadow, but i have no idea what it may be that's causing it. it may also be some small aspect of the planet texture itself but for that i'm not sure what it may be (maybe the colors and saturation?). maybe i'm just being too meticulous and setting too many high standards for myself to reach at this point? i still think that i need to improve this a lot more for what i was trying to achieve with it.

if you guys know anything that may help improve the realism, or the issue making it look unnatural, i would really appreciate it.

You use photoshop only?

not entirely. i make all the textures in photoshop. then i wrap the textures onto a 3d sphere in blender, then i import them into photoshop to compile them into the final planet. ideally i would like to get to the point where i can just make the planet in a 3d program then import it into photoshop for final touching up.

I know you're not happy with this one, but I prefer it to the other.  That one seemed too dark, maybe?  Anyway, I think you're being way to hard on yourself here.

it looks dark because the continents had larger and darker forests than compared to earth and this one. i also tried to copy the lighting of the reference in that one, which makes the planet look a bit darker. i actually prefer how the first test came out to this one overall. the first test just feels more 'natural' and realistic.
i just think that somewhere i messed up with the lighting on this one and the atmosphere doesn't feel realistic. maybe i put too much density into it without enough colour saturation.
there's something about the planet texture itself that's also bugging me and not feeling realistic, but i don't know what it may be. i also think the clouds lack enough structure and so add to the unrealistic aspect of the image as well.
but again all of these are just tests for me to improve on. they'll get better as i experiment more and add more layers of detail.
p.s. i'm also a perfectionist so little details bug me. like changing the opacity of a layer by 2% can make a big difference for me.

It's probably because the oceans are brighter on this planet

This is crazy. You're really achieving this photo-realism here.
Well done!
