Description "We have always been friends"

Grayson seems like nice guy, but what are his true motives?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phew, it's been awhile!

I drew this trying to imagine what's it like to be on the other end of Dick's Spyral mind trick thingy.

I wanted to practice faces and some digital painting. I used some reference for the face and hands. It's stiff...but good practice I think.

Thanks to and for helping me fix up this picture by giving critiques! I really really appreciated it guys.

Oh, I'm enjoying Grayson, but honestly I want Kyle Higgins back. A part of me thinks that Tom King and Tim Seely are writing it because their editors want them to.

Aw thanks! I don't do that many painting-like art...but I'm trying to get into it. This is kinda my attempt at mixing lineart and brushstoke painting..and it's Grayson!

I noticed you do lots of digital paintings too! Neat!

Haha, I think it's hard to remember a face when your memory of meeting that person gets wiped out.

Are you reading Grayson?

That's good. Ian is a handsome man!

But in this case I modeled him after a super model from Spain.

Hooray, nice to see more of your art! And it's looking great as always, Alpha.

I'm happy to see another Grayson piece from you, and I'm loving the perspective here. The pose combined with the background makes for a very bold, edgy piece.
That said however, I'll try to give you my critiques as well as I can. Everything about his face screams 'Dick' for me except for the nose. His face is a bit on an angle, so the nose shouldn't be drawn straight as if he's truly head-on with the viewer. If you added a little 'curve' where the bone meets the cartilage, I think it would add much more depth to the nose. And looking at it now, it looks like that's what you actually did - but the 'cartilage' part is too low, which makes the nose look far more bony than it should.
And lighting is a great thing, but maybe you can try to ease up on it a little. The lighting on his face is perfect, but the lighting on the more muscled areas are too harsh. You already shadowed the neck well as it is, so I find that the line of lighting there is unnecessary - well, at least to that degree. It's fine that you decided to add the light there, but I think it would've looked better if you only stuck to lighting the lower part of that muscle. If the lighting is too close to a more heavily-shadowed area like that, the contrast is much more obvious, which gives a bit of 'sunburned' effect (the neutral off-white of the light color makes the warm tones of the shadowing pop out much more, which makes the shadow look much more red than it should). Areas like his right shoulder and arm (and I emphasize his right, not mine ) also didn't need to be lighted to that degree. I don't know what it's called, and I apologize if it's not a very eloquent nickname, but it's the part I like to call 'The Shoulder Butt.' It's funny to see just how many people fail to notice it, but shoulders/arms are connected by so many muscles, and I love how you acknowledged that and drew each one near-perfectly. They're all in the right places, but like I mentioned - you already shadowed them very well. The shoulder-butt (the part of the shoulder that looks like a butt. I know, not a graceful name, but it'll do for now) is divided into two parts - and it's wonderful to see that you pay attention to that detail. But because you added lighting to both of those parts, it gives the appearance that the muscle there is bulging and look much bigger than they are (And Dick is known to be athletic, but not overly muscular). The lighting on the 'outer' part is perfect, but it's unnecessary for the 'inner' half (or at the very least, it could be toned down). The same can be said for his arm (the one extending to the viewer). It looks like you added more of that neutral off-white to light the top and lower-half muscle of the arm. The lighting on the top of the arm is perfect - but lighting the lower-half was again unnecessary. Again I mention the sunburned-effect. Be very careful using that off-white too close to a heavily-shadowed area (because of contrasting issues). Everything about the left arm is perfect, however (The blending of the shadows are perfect, and the lighting there is very subtle. Try to go along this route with shadows/lights, because in the end, less can be more.).
Honestly - I think that's all I can come up with for now. Just in case you don't want to reread that monster of a post I just typed up now, I'll put it all in a nutshell - try to add a little more depth to the nose by adding a curve between the bone/cartilage, and don't go heavy with the lighting where it doesn't need it. Contrast can either help or hurt you, so everything in moderation.

Now, on to the subject of Mr. Grayson himself!
I know I'm going to get some backlash for this, but I'm actually liking Agent 37 much more than Nightwing.
I dunno, maybe it's because Dick is a character with such a rich history? I wasn't even born when he first became Nightwing, so maybe I'm not as sentimental to the mantle as I am for the character himself. But now that I'm actually here and keeping up with his super-spy life, I guess I feel as if I'm actually along for the ride for once.
I'm sorry that you miss Higgins' run, though. I might prefer the story in Grayson, but I think Dick will just remain Nightwing in the hearts of many fans, right? I'm still wondering where they take Dick after he overthrows Spyral, but ah well. I'm young and I have some years ahead to find out.

(And it's funny how quickly art on DA can roam free on the internet. Those crazy Grayson fans, haha.
But seriously, I hope everybody acknowledges that you're not ready to unleash this bad boy on the internet just yet and respects your wishes. )

Haha lovely essay you have here. Are you using a phone or something to type this out? Anyways, thanks for typing it out! based on your critique I made some changes.

It seems that people don't like the contrast I added into the picture, so I went back to remove some of the contrast by painting over it. Also I removed the filters and removed most effects I added to the picture. The picture you see now is closer to what I actually made before I decided to add effects and adjustments to it. Just wondering if people would like it better.

Also, I made the nose more masculine (wider with a kink in the nose where the cartilage meets bone.)

For you to see the changes I uploaded the old version to my stash so you can compare.  sta.sh/0134q6tbmbgw

Haha, also the shoulder butt is called the deltoid. So graceful. such wow. shoulder butt.

It's super helpful getting critiques and changing things around. Kinda fun really.

Oh, it's not that I prefer Dick as Nightwing over Agent 37. I have nothing against his changing roles. I'm saying I prefer Higgins over Seely and King.

I like Seely's and King's run, but I can't help feel like they are more...catering than writing something they really want to write. I dunno how to put it. It's nice to be catered to you know. Fans get what they like on a plate, but I feel like they aren't writing their best when they are trying hard to please fans. It's subjective though. I have nothing against Seely and King. I just knew that Higgins really loved Nightwing and felt like he got the Dick character right but the higher ups kept getting in his way. I thought the side characters in Higgins run were also better (like Raya, Jenny, and *cough* Travis), whereas in Grayson the characters are basically sexy lady, sexy male, sexy lady, sexy male. There's only 3 issues...but I have a feeling there's a trend going on there.

Once again, I still like Grayson, and I'm along for the ride, but I just pine for some good old Higgins writing. If anything...I just want Higgins to write him...maybe for the Grayson run as well. Anyways, I'm a fangirl of writers too. My ideal writers would be Scott Synder, some Grant Morrison, and Brian Azzarello though. Especially that Azzarello. I'll read anything from him.  Maybe I need to give Seely and King some time and I'll become a fan of them too, but as a fangirl of Higgins, I have a bit of bias going on. Overall, I'm not saying one is better than the other. I just prefer one writer over the other.

Not quite - my PC's on its last legs, but I figured I'd still milk whatever life it has left. So I'm so sorry I didn't get to you sooner!
But anyways, I compared the two versions you have. The changes you made were subtle but made such a huge difference in the long run. Lightly shading over the contrasted area on his extended arm makes it softer on the eyes while making the hand pop out more - so two birds with one stone there. I also noticed the changes with the nose - it looks better now, and adds more form to the face.

But yes, I understand about filters. They're seriously fun to play with, and I find that they're the icing on top of the cake. XD Sadly it's sometimes hard to find the best combination of filters to really set the mood - and it's easy to go overboard with them because of how much fun they are. It's a double-edged sword, sadly.

Yes, the deltoid! I guess that answers anybody's questions regarding whether or not I'm smarter than a 5th grader, haha.

I really hope the critiques helped, and I really applaud you for taking them all to heart and applying the changes. With what you're doing, you'll be improving with leaps and bounds whenever you start something new.

Well-said regarding Grayson/Nightwing, and I now that you mention it I can see a trend with Grayson's cast of characters.
Higgins' run was actually the first time I ever read a comic, ever. I read some articles about Dick's history here and there, but I never had a full grasp of what his personality was like, so I really didn't have anything to compare with Higgins' interpretation. But you're right, his run was certainly plagued by crossovers, wasn't it? I have a feeling those kind of hindered him from writing at his full potential (and seeing more original arcs), but I guess I'll never really know.
I admit Dick's personality in Grayson is much more fun-loving/playful than we see in Nightwing, which I find kind of odd, haha (I mean, he was tortured by the Crime Syndicate and unmasked as Dick Grayson to the world). But all recent events aside, I admit I enjoy a more lighthearted tone of voice for Dick, which probably explains why I enjoy reading Grayson as much as I do. He definitely says some cheeky things I can roll my eyes at, but I guess that's just part of his chatty persona. He's a performer, so I guess it makes sense he has some sort of bravado.
BUT. The biggest issue I had with it lately was in issue 3 when he ( SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T READ IT ) slept with Agent 8 so early on in the story. ( END SPOILERS. ) I understand it might have been to establish some sort of emotional bond with her for the sake of the story, but I'm just not sure if Dick would sleep with another woman he barely knows so early on in a relationship. Again, maybe it's because I actually don't know much about Dick's personality, but this is when I have to agree with your fanservice theory 100%.
Aside from that, I'm really enjoying the run so far. It's not perfect, but it's fun.

I haven't read much of Scott Snyder's work, but I read Court of Owls some months ago and I can honestly say that it was the first comic I've read that I enjoy as much as a novel. His style of writing seems so...I'm not sure how to describe it. Innovative? Thought-provoking? Loved the tidbits here and there about the Court and Bruce's slow descent into madness. If this is what I'll get from reading Snyder's work, then I should really pick up more of his comics.
Sadly I haven't read any of Brian Azzarello's work, but I'm so tempted to read his run of Wonder Woman (I think he wrote that, if memory serves?). Now you're just tempting me even more!
Haha, it's okay, bias is perfectly understandable. It always takes a little time to adjust from one writer to another; only time will tell.
Thanks for sharing your opinion with me. Discussing different writers is always refreshing.

Okies, I know this is long and random, but can I apologize if I said anything offensive?

I think near the end I was starting to ramble whatever came in my head haha. Recently, I just finished reading Earth-2 and I was so upset that the original writer left in the middle of a climax.   I just felt so heart-broken by DC I started to remember that I was kinda angry at them and started typing whatever.

I had to think about what I wrote and wondered if things came out wrong. Hence I'm posting this message too.

Yay another essay! I enjoy your long write-ups.

Poor pc. Doesn't seem like it will get better. I'm already sad we see less of WhiskeySalad's amazing works.

Anyways, I really enjoyed the critiques. They were really helpful. It was tiring changing the picture a lot...but I'm pleased with the end more now. Thanks for taking the time to stare at my work!

I haven't really gotten into comics for very long too (at least I don't think so). Originally I just read for the character, Dick Grayson, and at that time Scott Synder and Grant Morrison was writing him (this was just before New 52). I loved how he was depicted in them so much that I began to follow the Morrison's and Synder's other works regardless of the character they were writing. It kinda helped me analyze what I like in a character and story more...instead of just liking a character just because I like that character. Though I like drawing Dick the most!

I highly recommend Azarello's Wonder Woman! It's probably one of the best comics in the New 52. I discovered Azarello before he worked for (main) DC though.  He wrote a comic called 100 Bullets which is AMAZING. I highly recommend it if you like mature dark gritty stories. Personally I think his 100 Bullets is the best comic I ever read in my comic reading...career. He's doing a fine job in DC comics and I try to pick up any comic he touches. He's currently working on DC's Future's End which is a pretty good read too.

haha, yep that Synder! He writes like a novelist I think. Usually his work has a slow buildup and then an explosive ending. Usually I have a hard time remembering what he is writing or where he is going in the beginning and middle. I think his work is better when you can read the whole arc back to back like a book. Only at the end does his work really come together as a whole. He is good at getting the Batfamily dynamic right too.

Azarello is great at really dark and gritty stories. He has excellent characterization, and while sometimes his characters seem out there, he is amazing at making their speech and behaviors believable, which is pretty rare in a writer.  He’s also really good at getting slang and street vernacular right which really helps the setting. His stories are quite bloody though, but I like the dark kind of stories anyways. His big reveals and endings are always so satisfying too. I think DC likes to use Azarello at making smaller more unknown characters more interesting, which is why he got Wonder Woman and Future's End.

Morrison might not be for the average casual reader though. Behind his words is a bunch of philosophical ideas, metaphors to famous myth and legends, and thought provoking theories. Some people may find his works as maybe trying to hard...or too hard to understand. I think he tries to write stories that have literary merit to them. Some people that just want to have a good time reading though and not have to analyze his work to get what's going on. Personally, I like analyzing what he has to say. He also has the tendency to really change things up when things start to get stale. After all he did kill Batman and created (and then also killed) Damian. Morrison’s actions might not please everyone and sometimes even I question his choices, but in the end I value his ideas and his risky efforts to change things (usually with the intention of making things better which I really appreciate since I hate stagnation).

Kyle Higgins is just your good old fanboy. I just like that a major fanboy gets to write Nightwing. He was doing really well until DC higher ups pushed him away. Have I mentioned this theory like a billion times? You pretty much summed up what I think happened to Higgins run. Anyways, I've picked up his indie comic C.O.W.L, but I have so many other comics to read I haven't had the chance to read it yet.

There are other writers that I like too, but those are the big names ones I think most people would know.

I read Grayson #3 and honestly the moment he slept with her--I was like--"yup, she’s gonna die.” I read enough books and watched enough shows to see where that's going. I would be more surprised if she didn’t die in that issue! I AM surprised that King and Seely kinda took the easy way to make audiences feel bad for Grayson by doing the sacrificial love trope. (Although I have a feeling Alia's death has more to do with Tiger's personality than Dick's later). Anyways, tropes aren’t bad, but that was sudden and cheesy. Higgins did that too but at least it was drawn out before it happened. Personally, I like darker stories (with some humor in them) like I said before. I think light-hearted stories can easily go wrong especially if they dumb things down, which I think can be insulting to people who like depth like me. If I wanted well done light-hearted stories I would probably go read Marvel instead. Hehe, but Seely and King are doing okay...they seem to be trying to find a good balance, but I think they have to be careful not to underestimate their readers. However, I'm really glad you are enjoying Grayson more than I seem to be. I think I'm just worried that maybe in time Grayson won't be for readers like me anymore.

Now that I’ve been reading more and more DC titles, and the more I pay attention to writers (and artists) it gets harder to not notice that…maybe DC does not have it under control. Over the years I find more and more of DC’s decisions really annoying me which is unfortunate cause I love their characters and stories. But when they keep forcibly changing the story, losing their best writers, and doing other questionable decisions it really gets on my nerve. Personally, I think the writers (and artists) are more important than the characters. After all they are the ones that make the story and characters come alive, but DC doesn't seem to be treating the creators well. If Azarello or Synder leave…I’m going with them. Azarello and Synder would probably be better writers if DC wasn't breathing down their neck anyways!

Sorry for the essay! I just had a lot to say. This is all my personal opinion though....

Hooray for in-depth thoughts! We should be journalists or something, haha.
And aww, there's nothing to apologize for! I read your post and I found absolutely nothing to be offensive. If anything, I find your posts to be some of the most refreshing things to read here.

Haha, you're flattering me. I find it shameful more than anything - I'm happy that I've managed to use this PC for so long, but it's just a shame when you feel inspired to draw something on a whim only to find out you can't because your computer won't cooperate. I've had so many ideas for so long, but since I didn't strike while the iron was hot, I just can't find the motivation to sketch them down anymore. Le sigh. The frustrations of art, right? ):

You're very welcome! It takes a lot of patience to change these little details here and there, but you did it - and I commend you for that! I will never get tired of staring at your Dick Grayson art. Ever. Just so you remember.

It's nice to see we're on the same boat! Honestly, I found that Scott Snyder captured Dick's voice the best in his N52 Batman run (I never read the Black Mirror, sadly), but I also understand what you mean when you say it helped you find what you like in characters and stories. I'm sure we've both read bad stories just because a character we loved was involved in it - only to realize the whole thing was probably a waste of time. Funny how much we come to appreciate the better stories (and in turn realize what we really enjoy in them) after reading the bad ones. But in the end, we both love it when our favorite acrobat plays a large role in a good story, haha.

Urf, I'm going to head to Barnes and Noble this weekend, and you're honestly tempting me to spend WAY more on comics than I planned to, Alpha! I've had my eye on Wonder Woman for a while because I wanted a more feminine touch in what I read - and now I know I have to read it eventually. I've  never heard of 100 Bullets, but I do love my stories dark and gritty. I think I'm going to see how I like Azarello's run on Wonder Woman and pick up 100 Bullets along the way if I like his style.

Thankfully I read the collected trade for Court of Owls, haha. Honestly, I've heard a LOT of people saying they become confused if they read it in a month-to-month schedule, and I can honestly say I'd probably forget the storyline here and there, too. But you're right when you say Snyder is a novelist - I actually prefer his slow buildup that promises an explosive finish over the episode-to-episode style that I read in most comics. With most comics I read, they follow a mini-storyline for each issue that makes the whole thing feel very separated and irrelevant from one another...and like you, I guess I enjoy a story I can really bite into and think about for days to come. In the end, I'll take a high-quality story that takes some time to tell rather than several smaller stories every month.

I admit - I've read some posts from people expressing their opinion on Morrison, and I can see that the opinions are pretty mixed. Some love his 'wild card' approach in storytelling, while others LOATHE him just because he killed off Damian. I'm not always too fond of heavy rhetoric in what I read (there are some exceptions), but I do enjoy my fair share of metaphors from time-to-time. Another book I've wanted to read for some time was the Dick/Damian version of Batman and Robin, but the only thing that's holding me back is the fact that it's Pre52, and I'd have to read a whole other arc before that just to understand what's going on. In the end, I suppose I'd have to pick up one of his books before I form my own opinion.

Oh yes, I'm aware of how big of a Dick Grayson fanboy Kyle Higgins is. He definitely deserves a pat on the back not only for writing Nightwing pretty well - but also for having a chance to make his own mark on the character's legacy, which is definitely something to be proud of.
I'm still working on the 4th volume of his Nightwing run, and so far I'm enjoying Dick's time in Chicago.
HOWEVER. I'd say that the biggest issue I have with Higgins' voice regarding anything Dick Grayson isn't even found in Nightwing - it's found in Batman Beyond. I myself have never watched the animated series or read a single issue, but I was shocked when I read about the Bruce/Dick/Barbara affair. Like I mentioned, I never read a single issue, so maybe I'm just taking things out of context...But I don't like how the drama was milked in that particular issue, and it's just another reason why I don't support DickBabs (it's the typical will they/won't they relationship, which isn't for me). Maybe it's my fault and I should be open-minded, but I was just wondering if you'd like to give me your opinion on that when you have the time?

Haha, I understand where you're coming from regarding Alia. XD I'm loving Grayson so far and though I understand he's sort of the 'James Bond' of DC Comics, I really hope they won't take that same route in any future issues. In my terms, 'sexy' is more effective when it's subtle, and having hanky-panky with another agent early on in your spy career doesn't exactly turn me on (or make me feel sympathetic for either Dick or Alia for that matter).
I didn't particularly care for Raya, but I felt much more sympathetic for Dick when she died because the stories told just how close they were, and her death definitely had consequences to his psyche. I feel that Alia's character was there more for the narrative regarding guns rather than the lost love/grief trope that we see so often in books and TV. So I guess Raya and Alia had their roles to play, but I found Raya to be a more effective character overall.
Like I mentioned - your posts are so refreshing because they're true on many points. Fun, light-hearted stories are wonderful, but they can easily become a trainwreck, you're right. I suppose the same goes for dark, gritty tales, but it's like comparing apples and oranges. Dark tales crumble when they try too hard, but I hate it when light stories treat me as if I'm incapable of any thought or reasoning. Everything in moderation.
I'm enjoying Grayson because it's a fun read with interesting metaphors and topics to think about (I loved that Future's End issue), but I'll probably avoid it myself if Dick continues to have sex with women he just met. That's not a story for me.

DC characters can be like courtesy vehicles - they're the same vehicles in the end, but different drivers come and go. I don't care if the car is a sexy Mercedes-Benz - if the man who gets behind the wheel is a freaking psychopath who drives recklessly all around the road with that poor car, I'm staying far FAR away from it, no matter how beautiful it is.
Ridiculous parallel, but it gets the point across. I guess the same can be said for DC characters, haha. These are characters with 75+ years of legacy, and it's impossible to have one writer telling the stories for that long...it's a shame, if you think about it.
The problem is that everybody has their own interpretation of these characters, which creates inconsistencies. For some people, one interpretation may seem like the perfect one, while for others, it's very out-of-character.
I'm not trying to bash anybody, but just look at what happened to Batgirl. Gail Simone's run was pretty dark and gritty I hear, but now they're taking Barbara along the 'cool-and-hip' route, which alienates the audience who enjoyed Simone's work.
The two of us enjoy reading between the lines, so we're observant. We pay attention to detail. No, I'd even go as far as to say we're obsessed with detail. So when you have all these inconsistencies clashing together, we wonder what character we're even looking at.
It's frustrating, I'm not going to lie. There's some moments that I smile from ear-to-ear because I'm reading about a character I love and hold dear - and at other times that character does something that I never thought I'd see them do. And then the fandom may take certain qualities about these characters and exaggerate them to the point that that's all they are.
In the end, comics aren't something I analyze too much. I've grown too tired and frustrated with it.
I'm just going to enjoy the ride while it lasts and remember the stories I do love...and if some maniac decides to drive my favorite Mercedes-Benz in another decade or so, I'm high-tailing it out of the road with you.

Haha, finally took the time to respond to this.

You have a good head on your shoulders. I enjoy your take on what you think of DC comics. Helps me cool my head down a bit too.

Too bad you can't draw as much. Your last piece was really amazing. I think it would help to have a journal to write down art ideas (although I don't journal my ideas either! I should probably start ).

I'm amazed how long your responses are too.

Totally read Wonder Woman. It does have a nice feminine touch to it even though it's written by a guy. 100 bullets is up to you.

The old Batman and Robin is a pretty good read, especially in the beginning. I think it kinda drops off after awhile though (Hrm...I guess not surprisingly, I thought it lost it's sparkle when Grant Morrison stopped writing it.) Oh I also realized that Tomasi, the current writer for New 52's Batman and Robin, took after Morrison in the pre-New 52 Batman and Robin too. Ah, no wonder I couldn't stick around for both Batman and Robin series for as long. Tomasi has really good family moments, but I don't think he adds new things. I'm not sure why I can't stick around Tomasi for that long...he's not a bad writer. He even wrote the old Nightwing issues too (which I did read all of. The old Nightwing series was kinda only okay though haha).

I think the old Batman and Robin series from Grant Morrison ties in with his pre AND new 52 Batman Inc. New 52 didn't erase a lot of stuff...which I guess makes it complicated haha.

Honestly, I didn't care for Raya either. But like you said, I think she was a good character to help readers care for Dick. I liked where Higgins was going in the Chicago run. Spoilers. It was a bit cheesy with the Zucco thing though, but the other stuff was good. I think there's a good amount of Dick Grayson that you've been missing in the Chicago run. Although I thought the whole circus thing and issue #0 was a good look into Dick as well.

I think sexy is better when it is subtle too. I mean...every time Dick has a buttshot in his comic it would blow up on the internet and then there be like fanart and stories all about it!

OMG, you're not into Dick/Babs too? This is one thing I never ever say because I think people will rage. I don't like it for the same reasons as you. The off/on thing just won't work. In Batman Beyond it wasn't really a drama though. Gee, how do I explain this. It's complicated. I'm not 100% sure, but this is what I think is how it goes. In fandom people believe Dick and Babs dated, but for a large portion of Batman history that wasn't true. They never actually dated. Dick as Robin always had a crush on the older cute Batgirl. But that was all it ever was--a crush and never more. Even in the Adventures of Batman and Robin TV series, Nightwing and Batgirl teased each other about a relationship, but they weren't together. I think only when Dick got his first own Nightwing comic series did they mutually show real romantic interest in each other and dated (and it ended terribly too!). Anyways, Batman Beyond is OLDER than the first Nightwing comic. That means at that time Batman Beyond was created Dick and Babs probably still never really got together because no writer ever wrote it.

In the Batman Beyond TV series,  there is a short scene where Barbara (who is the Commissioner in the future) is talking to Terry and he asks her what happened to Dick. Babs says that what she and Dick had was just "puppy love" and in the end they decided it wouldn't work out. Eventually she decided to date Bruce. People think that gross cause she is young and Bruce is old but Babs has been quite older than Dick for a long time until the New 52 (She was maybe 5-6 years older than Dick.) Bruce is quite older than Babs, but I remember reading an old comic where Babs was learning to be a lawyer or something. So that means she is out of college at least. Anyways, Bruce and Babs dating isn't as far fetched as fans might think it. In the show, Babs later says that Bruce and her were actually in love, but they both took their jobs too seriously to take it further. So Babs called it off. (yep Babs broke up with Batman!). But yeah. That's it. It wasn't really dramatic I think, Dick might have been uncomfortable that his mentor dated his lifelong crush and it might have added to why Dick left Batman, but I'm sure it wasn't that bad. I only read a few of the new Batman Beyond comics so far, I know Higgins references Dick a lot in there though. Spoilers. I'm not sure if it was "milked" in the Batman Beyond comic issues but I think it's plausible for the Batman Beyond version of Batman and Babs to have a kid since they were actually in love according to the show.

Anyways what I think is basically fans didn't take in account of the timing and history and made it more dramatic than it really is. Also...they didn't realized that the Dick and Babs relationship was not all that pretty. I think a lot of fans are pretty young and think not having your crush is the worst thing ever and don't know that love can be pretty complicated.

Honestly, I can't be sure though. This is just me reading between the lines.

Personally, I think Bruce and Babs might be a good fit. They're both really serious about their work and they're also very intelligent people. Babs seems like more down to earth which can help Bruce realize his limits, but Bruce can help push her to reach her goals...and plus she's not a cat thief, or the daughter of a immortal man who has his own assassin league. It just seems well balanced to me. Plus Commissioner Gordan will have a heart attack when he finds all that stuff out!   As for Dick, well I like the Dick/Kory relationship, but I think Dick hasn't found the right person yet.

Haha, I actually do like light-hearted stuff when I ask for it I guess. But when I want a real story, I want it to have teeth so that it can grip me in. I guess I expect comics to have that kind of story since its supposed to be about people facing life or death everyday. But admittedly being "too dark and gritty" in the wrong way can be terrible too.

Yeah, if I don't like the driver, I'm getting out. Cute metaphor.

I don't mind writers changing. I do mind if writers were changed when they didn't want to be though especially when they were doing just fine, which is what I think happened to Higgins and Simone. Also, I don't mind character inconsistencies between writers either. You either are a good writer...or not. If that person can make the story work well AND bring something new. I'm along for the ride.

Haha, at first I didn't try to analyze things too much too....but I just do. It's like a switch I can't turn off.

Thanks for taking you time to write out that stuff. Hrm...I wrote more than I intended to.

Nice!

I really like the texture on his glove and beltstrapthingies(whatever they're called)
The bg makes him stand out pretty well too(though tbh I can't help but to think he's standing in front of a giant piece of candy x') )
I thiiink his pinkie may be a little too long. I know the other fingers are shortened due to perspective, but it still looks a bit off. The shading to accentuate the bone in his right lower arm might be a bit too dark or at least too harsh given the way the light is falling on him(I'm talking about the line of shade on the left of the bone). Also he's staring right passed the viewer while he's holding out his hand in the viewer's direction. It's like he was planning to dance with you, but suddenly sees a prettier girl xD ugh I feel like I'm nagging way too much(sorry)

Anyway I do like this pic! I don't think I've seen you work with pink in your pics before
For your next pic perhaps it could be interesting to work with colors you don't normally use? Or maybe something halloween related? OR BOTH??!!!
Who knows.
Anywho, good job! Can't wait to see what you draw next!

Oh yay! Okies, so I made some changes based on what you said. Small changes but I hope they make enough of a difference. Althoguh I wasn't quite sure what part of the arm was off. .

The face and the hand was bothering me, but I couldn't figure it out until you pointed it out. If it is still off, let me know because it's hard for me to see what's right anymore after looking at it for so long. (like does he still look like he's staring off into the distance?) Also when you pointed out the pinky I realized I shaded the hand wrong.

Ah, I always wanted to use colors I don't normally use...but I honestly don't even know how to use normal colors yet! . Lately I've been trying to get the hang of picking and choosing my own colors from scratch, and it's pretty hard.

Haha, the candy background is from his comic....kinda I think. Maybe not the exact colors or look. DC comics kinda gave him a chip in his head that he can use to hypnotize people, and for some reason it sends pinkish "waves."

Anyways thanks! It's super useful to have someone around to help notice my mistakes.

His eyes are better now

Wait he became a hypno artist? All that butt charm wasn't enough for the guy?

No problem!  Always glad to help!

Yep he's a hypnotist now. haha, he doesn't really need the chip when his butt could have done it for him! It's kinda a fun read.

Anyways, I made changes again. If you don't mind, please take a look.

The old version is here by the way, so you can compare: sta.sh/0134q6tbmbgw

Hope I not bothering you. Drawing in a more realistic way is way harder and it is way easier for mistakes to really pop out I think.

Oh don't worry, I mind none I know how easy it is to miss mistakes after you've stared at something for so long. Besides, I like helping you!

The lighting is way better now! Other than that I don't really know what more I can add to that.
For some reason the expression is still a bit off for me. Not because of the eyes, but like... he looks confident, but still a bit too reserved(face+ his pose is a bit stiff) to be the Grayson we all know and love. Personally, I think you should try to make him look a bit more smug/arrogant(subtle though, don't go overboard) He's in full control of the situation and he knows it, so it would suit him.
Sorry for only mentioning that now U.U I know changing that means changing pretty much everything, but keep it in mind for next time!

Dammit now I can't stop imagining Dick hypnotizing people with his butt(with buttwaves)

haha, I know what you mean by the face. Originally I had a smiling mouth with teeth and maybe some wrinkles but I decided against it because an open mouth and teeth can be tricky to do and also wrinkles can make a person look older.

I'm glad you saved that for last because faces is one of the hardest things! People always look at the face first and I worked on the face the most. If you pointed out the flaws on the face first I would have been (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Hrm...I can go back real quick and see what I can do for expression.

Do Do Do Do~

Maybe something like this? : sta.sh/0weilew71rv

I tried to push it...buuuuuuut when I push it too hard it started to look strange, so I made it kinda more subtle. If there are any little things that I can change abut it feel free to point it out. The small changes I make are actually not that hard to do with photoshop. Although I can't change the pose haha.

I know pose and face is stiff. I'm in that phase where I'm more concerned with things looking correct. I'm not looking to do a masterpiece. At least not yet! I wanted to practice colors and facial rendering the most which is why most of my pieces lately are really really stiff poses. *cough* I just have the tendency to draw fanart to get inspired. Anyways, hope I'm getting there.

Good ol'  Dick buttwaves.

I like the eyes way better now! He looks much more assertive!
The mouth is stiiiiill a little weird to me, though it could just be because I stared at it for too long.

Thanks for the tip! XD I'll work my critique bottom to top from now on haha

Ah I getcha. Keep practicing those smexy muscles than (' v ')b
But aren't expressions also a good thing to practice for facial rendering?(unless you aspire to one day rule DA with your beautiful art of the mask people!!!! ( which could totally work))
Ah well, we all gotta learn by trial and error.

Dickbuttwaves... Someone draw this. x')

I thiiink I have an idea why the mouth is wrong. I think I'll just combine the new eyes with the old version of the mouth with some minor changes...and then I'll call it done. It's time to move on.

Thanks a bunches though! I think the picture is much better now than when I first submitted it.

Haha, expressions are important and everyone loves them, but I think if I can't draw and structure a face correctly then I don't think I will get expressions right anyways. I kinda left expressions in the far back of my mind because there's a lot of technical stuff to learn first. I still can't fully grasp anatomy and I still have a hard time with realistic looking faces, so I have to leave some of the more interesting stuff for later unfortunately. But people learn things at different rates.

Lol if I draw beautiful masked people with no expression it can work! After all it's what Artgerm (Stanley Lau) does. He's a popular deviant that draws superheroines...(I think his faces are kinda expressionless though...except for maybe a smile here or there).

Anyways, thanks again.
