Description
This one is for my dear friend , who has always gone out of his way to be a downright amazing guy to me. A long time ago, he drew me a totally awesome comic about the Rawk, and even put me in it!He recently touched it up, and as thanks I wanted to draw him something. While he only wanted to see me draw baby Rawk Hawk, I got a little carried away and decided to surprise him.
While I'm at it, for the interested, I'll go ahead and share the bit of backstory my mind has whipped up concerning the good old jerk... hey, I've drawn him so much, it's impossible that I wouldn't have thought of it. You know me.
PS: I tried adding some color, but I didn't think it added much, and I think it looks cool in black and white like this. You guys all know his color scheme >_>
---
I don't know if being a jerk is hereditary, but if it is, there may be no better proof than the notoriously antagonistic brute Rawk Hawk, whose father was cheating and lying before he was born, albeit in the arena of marriage: his fights were waged with his wife, and not in the ring. And you can imagine that once said wife laid an egg, that "father" - he could be called such in a biological sense only - skedaddled as fast as he could.
So it came to pass, that he was never around to see that adorable little ball of feathers crawl from the egg. Ryan Aurelius* Hawk, although never knowing a dad, was a happy child in his mother's care. However, as the fledgling grew older, his mother fell into depression and disinterest in him. Perhaps because he reminded her so much of his father?
With little attention and care coming his way at home, the boy strove for the affection of others any way he could. Rather than falling into low self-esteem himself, he developed a cockiness that was at first hollow and baseless, but then quickly evolved into a self-sustaining loop. Relying on what he recognized as his blessings, good looks, nice hair, and an ostentatious and energetic nature, he became a schoolyard bully and the paragon of "bad boys" and "cool kids", the kind that shyer and nicer boys lament that the girls somehow cannot resist, and that all regard with either admiration or disgust, but always fear.
Eventually, his yearnings for the attentions and affections of others had become an addiction, which led him to the best of all places to ease these cravings: the Glitz Pit. Decked out in some punky accessories (especially the spiked wristbands and such, which we must remember in that world scream an affiliation with Lord Bowser and therefore evil and rebelliousness, whether or not such a bond actually exists) and calling himself the Rawk Hawk, he immediately captured the attention of Grubba, who saw in the young man a capacity for winning over and manipulating the crowd not present in the more humble and noble Prince Mush. It was Grubba who eventually guided him to his more "Spartan" look, as he felt it had a wider appeal, if it fit his name less.
So it was that Grubba took the cocky young bird into his tutelage. The Hawk recognized that he had, almost instantly, become the promoter's favorite. He accepted Grubba, in fact, as the father figure he had never had, taking his Southern hospitality and paternalism at face value - not realizing until much later, after the intervention of Gonzales, when Grubba's true motives were revealed, that it had all been an act. Did this have an effect on the narcissistic bird? More than he ever let on.
After all. He really doesn't have anyone to love but himself.

*Aurelius is his German name <3 I just love it

he seems to be that kind of character that will only appear in one game only, he may make some small cameo here and there but i dont think that he'll have any other important role, his design is really nice and i hope that they will make a character like that in other games, it will be specially nice if it's playable.
about the pic, i think that fourth and second designs could work really well as protagonists in games, the second could work well in a chibi setting and the fourth is very balanced.

*supergrin* This is wondrazing-terrific you know that, Fluffy? It's just phenomenal!
I am SO jealous of your style confidence!
That and how you managed to make baby Rawk Hawk (or shall we start calling him Ryan now? ...Nah.) 10 times as cute as I did! *pouty-blush*
And your backstory too! That's pretty much how I pictured it- Early abandonment- No father figure- Schoolyard bully... Building the rebel image- It all fits! Nintendo didn't do much with his character, but this backstory really makes him solid and believable! ...And far more sympathetic.
In the continuation of B2tML I think I pictured Fluffy becoming a second mother figure for him and a true friend- Her genuine kindness and concern a strange new experience for him. She fills a hole he'd had in his life that he didn't even know existed, it was like having antibiotic applied to a deep, nasty wound he'd never noticed- Pain flared and the years of neglect only made it worse, but he knew the wound was healing- And Fluffy was the nurse. And he liked it. He liked this kindness, he liked having someone care about him- And for some reason, maybe it was a child-like innocence resurfacing him due to the magic, but he felt obligated to reciprocate that kindness... He found he cared back...
Although when Rawk Hawk returns to normal at first he sort of brushes Fluffy off, still cold and unsure in the realm of social relationships- He's more comfortable with fans. But he has a revelation and feels guilty and goes after her eventually. And they meet in the Juice Bar... Where they talk the night away. I don't know if the relationship becomes romantic- (It's sort of a disillusionment episode for Fluffy as well, learning how egotistical and mean her favorite fighter truly is) But in the end, they become great friends and Rawk Hawk is better for it- More humble, nicer, more aware of the consequences of his actions and his true vulnerability, shattering his previous conceptions of near invulnerability... Though still rather cocky (because that's the quirk we love him for ) Rawk Hawk is more reserved after the regressive episode.
...Uh, at least that's how I was thinking it would go... What do you think?
You've characterized him so well! I especially like the way you adapted certain elements- Like the white feathers at the bird's temples- Making them way oversized- Almost like wings sprouting from his ears...It almost makes him look more... Gryphon-ish. And that really accentuates the Greco-Roman/mythological style he's associating himself with on stage.
It's also a wonderful expressive addition, as I noticed you've used those feathers to indicate sadness by making them droop- Clever, clever, CLEVER!
Also, I notice you've done away with his shoes in your adaption- Which was risky- But I really like it! The avian feet just give a more grounded look to the character and allows for an easier read for the viewer- in my opinion.
Also, lovin' the clever use of the "Mo-HAWK"! ^^
Now I've got to draw something for YOU!
