Description
Here's the RAW PENCILS of the second piece for the Hatsune Miku + Corolla Campaign! [link]I've been getting some very mixed reviews for this piece and I welcome it! Discussion is always good and never bad. It's what free-thinking minds should do, and honestly I learn quite a lot from them!
The Argument at large here is that it doesn't look quite Anime enough or "OTAKU" for Hatsune Miku and also that I copied Tony Taka's original drawing.
In my defense the client wanted her to look less Otaku and more "mature" specifically in her eyes, being a little slimmer. Aso the hair was requested to have more individual strands, to cater to a "sexier" American market. (However I will note that the nipple and side boob was strategically removed in the final.)
In terms of the piece looking like Tony Taka's, that was fully intentional. It seemed the client really liked that specific pose and simply had me redraw it. I submitted many variations anyway (which I will post as process pics later) but in the end...Tony Taka's still won the day! what can I say, it's a great pose! Just consider this piece an homage or like a remix of the original.
I'll admit, some of the digital colors on this piece ended up turning out little more realistic than I originally intended but I must stand by my man DOE, because I was blown away by his work on this piece. More importantly, so was the client!!!
I will post the digital colors soon, just wanted to give you a little taste and perhaps a little more insight into this piece.
Also I will note that artist Zain has now done an awesome new version of the print Ad for June, I believe that this is to illustrate to the public that these are just artist interpretations... Miku will always be Miku!
Like it or hate it? You be the judge!

i can see if someone was a huge miku fan they might dislike the changes from canon, and i am not going so far as to say that dislike would be unreasonable. however, i have no problem with the difference, even though i am a very big miku fan (in time any money ^_^). it is hard to argue about what is "canonical" when the vast majority of work is fan-made anyway.
like you mentioned (very graciously) discussion is good in art, which really is all about interpretation. but i would just like to put forth this argument in the end. if the world just started five minutes ago and miku hatsune had never existed, then looking at this piece of work it is simply a fantastic work of art, detailed, smartly proportioned and full of action.
thanks for posting it! (i too would like to put in a vote for the colored version ^_^)

So someone in T wanted Tony's Miku, but americanized. And THAT idea is wrong for me, because american Miku fans like the original art and the concert with the original look, not some masculined tanned beast. Others just don't like the vocaloid comcept at all, americanized or not.
I like your work very much and have nothing agaist it, all hate goes directly to T.

i forgot to mention the second main complain: Miku is a combination of voicebank and looks, and a lot of her popularity is based on the combination, not parts. When you change her look, age and character (by design), you break the combination, and that ^ "thing" no longer can be associated with its voice, it needs an older and more agressive voicebank as well to succeed.
Just answer - can you imagine _that_ Miku singing World is Mine? Or Ievan Polkka? Or Melody?

It loves.
I am Japanese. I like Mr. alvinlee's illustration better than Mr. Tony's illustration.
I want to see the color illustration of an original size.

Like !
Interestingly far more than the colored one on Toyota's website (and no it's not because of the uncensored boob, I actually prefer Miku more flat, that's a change with the usual anime female characters).
And we thank you for this tribute to Tony, all the Vocaloid fans recognized it. Very good work on the hairs too.

line art looks alot better, i think full size looks great, what ends up happening is that the ad is usually displayed alot smaller so the shadow form the nose ends up connecting to the lip giving an odd look. maybe DOE just didnt account that toyota would display the art in less than optimal conditions (too small too blurry too much compression)

Not anime enough? Sounds like some people need to expand their horizons. And with the various ways the medium looks, how does one prove something is "anime" enough anyway?

Me, I like it. Sadly I don't know about Taka's original piece, usually I despise art ripoffs, but if this is an homage as you say then I have no problem with it.
And about not being totally manga I don't know what to say; if people can't stand hybrid styles of drawing, which IMO are quite difficult to master, then fuck them.

I'm sure this will turn out very good. What I'm not so sure of, is the individual hair strands , cause they look shorter than the pigtails.
However, yor drawing skills are terrific man. Wonderful piece.

i donno..
for the face it tends to be a bit male-ish (i give a few artist friends a quick peek n the 1st question they ask is: is that a tran with long hair cosplaying as miku?)
maybe its the nose... and the mouth?

I like this bigger, raw version of it
To me, for some reason, the site version of this looks a bit weird (mostly the nose and lips; maybe because of the digital coloring style?) It's still a very nice piece though .
Also, I was curious about the extra set of hairbands and pins on her tie that you gave her. Was that also part of the commission or is that part of your style?
