Description
Here's the RAW PENCILS of the second piece for the Hatsune Miku + Corolla Campaign! [link]I've been getting some very mixed reviews for this piece and I welcome it! Discussion is always good and never bad. It's what free-thinking minds should do, and honestly I learn quite a lot from them!
The Argument at large here is that it doesn't look quite Anime enough or "OTAKU" for Hatsune Miku and also that I copied Tony Taka's original drawing.
In my defense the client wanted her to look less Otaku and more "mature" specifically in her eyes, being a little slimmer. Aso the hair was requested to have more individual strands, to cater to a "sexier" American market. (However I will note that the nipple and side boob was strategically removed in the final.)
In terms of the piece looking like Tony Taka's, that was fully intentional. It seemed the client really liked that specific pose and simply had me redraw it. I submitted many variations anyway (which I will post as process pics later) but in the end...Tony Taka's still won the day! what can I say, it's a great pose! Just consider this piece an homage or like a remix of the original.
I'll admit, some of the digital colors on this piece ended up turning out little more realistic than I originally intended but I must stand by my man DOE, because I was blown away by his work on this piece. More importantly, so was the client!!!
I will post the digital colors soon, just wanted to give you a little taste and perhaps a little more insight into this piece.
Also I will note that artist Zain has now done an awesome new version of the print Ad for June, I believe that this is to illustrate to the public that these are just artist interpretations... Miku will always be Miku!
Like it or hate it? You be the judge!

Client's views > random critiques.
This is beautiful, clean work. Continuity-mongers ought to lighten up on the nerdrage.

While I agree with some others about the face being somewhat out of character, the rest is simply lovely.
Miku has been drawn and redesigned by LOADS of different artists. Heck, very rarely do any of her songs have the same art style associated with them. This is just another. :3
I look forward to seeing more Miku art off of you (or perhaps art based on other Vocaloid characters, i'd love to see your version of Sweet-Ann).

In my eyes this is yet another flawless piece of art from you. Is it ok if i color it? Perhaps you could send me the higher res lineart to my mail aeonseraph@hotmail.com so i can make it more detailed. Check out my portfolio to see the quality level o the coloring you will get as a result. In any case thank you for your time and don't forget, there will always be critics, it's innevitable, just don't ever let them get under your skin.

I'm so glad that someone around here doesn't mind receiving mixed reviews. I won't mention names, but someone I tried to explain a thought process took it harsh and in the end basically said "well it's my art and i did it that way so there". And that person was a professional working artist too. Saddens me. Thanks for posting this. Can't wait to see what DOE did to it. Kudos.

Uwaa~AWESOME!!! This makes Miku look more appealing to a broader audience than just for us Otaku. Plus I like seeing people's different interpretations on a character; it can really bring out the artist's vision and that's what's important. Well to me at least lol Dammit it makes want to get a Corolla now lol But I gotta pay off my Scion before then xDDD
And hey, you credited Tony Taka for the original pose and it was the client's decision for wanting to with the pose, what more do they want from you?
Forget all the haters bro because they haven't got anything close to being as amazing as this! Keep doing what your doing!

Thanks for the detailed description on the discussion about this piece. I've probably seen the drawing by Tony Taka-sensei, but didn't remember it. Nevertheless this is a great homage to it, and even more so a tribute to Hatsune Miku. Great work!

Its a really solid drawing with solid depth and clean line weights. I havent seen Tony T. version so I cant speak about that. I really like the flow of the hair and the flow of her skirt.

I like it. It's also much better proportioned and less mangled. I actually have the figure based on T2's picture; while it's one of my favorites, the way she twists bothers me.
In then end, both of you got paid and published. Screw the haters.

Tony Taka, his style has totally gone bland on me. Not really my cup of tea as it seems that it has invaded japan.

I actually really like the style you drew her in. It's accurate, while still adding a fun american flare, and in the end, I think that was perfect for her debut.

well as otakus are mostly made from die hard fanatics their opinion will be heavily biaised, personally it's a good mix of japanese and occidental style.
Iy's perfectly composed, i recognise the character and hell that was a big challenge and you passed it perfectly....
After haters gonna hate, but the picture by itself is perfect ((maybe somethin a little wrong with the left fore arm but it's a detail)
Hats off!

I actually prefer the decision to make Miku less "kawaii-desu" and "anime-like" as we have plenty of that all over the internet.
Making her more adult, and realistic gives a more fresh approach to making her appeal to more audiences. Even with CG models, they still stick to her anime appearance.
I agree the sideboob looks a tad off, just a tad, because with all decency, even a robot would wear a bra. (I actually prefer Miku as a flat-chest because she seems more streamlined that way.)
As for the strands of hair, I really do love the fact that they have individual strands instead of being one big clump.
I enjoyed the details on this uncolored version, even though the final one looks just as amazing if not more so.
I still think you did a good job, and give my kudos to the client for making good decisions on the idea itself.

Defense? So let me get this straight!? You did exactly what the client asked of you and people have a problem with that??? Screw it I say ^^ I love the vocaloids, but I'm not gonna talk down something this great just because it's not Anime enough, WTF mate??? A character remains the same, but depending on the artists themselves, that characters look will definitely change. How many different ways have we seen Batman drawn? Some go dark, others cartoonic, some traditional it doesn't change the character! It's the same with any fan-art as well. So they brought over Miku to appeal to an U.S audience and decided it to be best to give her a more western look. Okay, thanx! It's still Miku, still gorgeous, Alvin you did good and that's what I have to say about that ^^
Also Otaku are weird purists types, so don't let their overly obsessed ways bum ya. They're never really happy
