Description
"Tulp Soldaat" (Tulip Soldier)A mini graphic novel/comic/what have you set in Holland during WWII. I'm more of an illustrator, not a comic artist so I wanted to make a comic without it looking too much like a ... comic? (and also prove illustrators can do anything a comic artist can do, haha~)
I did not include dialogue or an exact sense of time passing... I just wanted a sense of mood and atmosphere to come from pictures alone.

So beautiful and sad! I love your style of drawing! As a Dutch person this has such an emotional effect, you almost made me cry. Again beautiful! Keep it up! And I really think you've managed to capture the Dutch man with his tall lanky frame.

I know you didn't include a sense of passing time, but I think it could've benefited from that. The atmosphere is very nice, but it's kind of... mysterious but not in a way that, to me, makes it better. I'm just left kind of confused. My eyes find it very pretty to look at, but my brain is kind of pulling its metaphorical hair out.
I'm also a cartooning student so, these kinds of mechanics are being drilled into me. Take that as you will.

oranje was the name for the dutch resistance in WWII.

Bing Translator says it's Dutch for orange, bit I think it was just the flower guy's name.

close yes. It's the name for the Dutch Resistance and they wore those bands on the arm. Oranje means 'orange' and their country was founded from Willem Van Oranje (william of orange) so that's how they get it.

considering you say you're not a comic artist, you're very good at setting the flow and pace of a scene, and the lack of words really helps to create the tone here (something I often forget myself, I find myself forcing dialogue into scenes that would do better without it!) I'll definately be checking out the rest of your work! The eye flows easily from moment to moment, thanks for reminding me I dont have to fill a page with words to build a narrative!
