Description Media: 0.5 mechanical pencil.

Tutorial edited together in Photoshop. Brown comic panels scanned from the Finnish translation of ”Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä) by Hayao Miyazaki (first book page 2).

Links to the result practice images: First , Second , Third .

I liked the “analyze images“ too much to not share them.
Hope you find this tutorial useful.

Nausicaa is one of my favorites too! I love Miyazaki in general, but Nausicaa especially (my 4-year-old loves to pretend just about everything is a wind-glider).

Your analysis is really good, and I definitely think there is a lot to be learned from copying. Thank you for the tutorial.

Thank you so much and you are welcome.
Aww… It must be cute to watch him/her playing. :3 (Why does English have gender specific pronouns…)
I discovered Miyazaki just a few years ago and I have been in love with the movies and the comics ever since. Nausicaa is my favorite of them too.

I hate that about English too; as it happens I have two girls.

Munkin pitäisi varmaan kokeilla jotain tällaista. Oot kyllä kehittynyt ihan hirveän paljon, menit musta ohi jo aikoja sitten.

Kiitos.
Töhertelen melkein koko ajan. Siinä ilmeisesti pakostakin kehittyy.

My goodness, I REALLY wanted something that could help me out with backgrounds since I'm just awful with them! This is really helpful! Especially all the tips as to what I should analyze! I usually try to reference things and just guess - but I imagine analyzing would definitely work better!

Aha I haven't been working quite with backgrounds, but I have taken your suggestion in the tutorial for people! Once I'm less afraid of backgrounds, I'll give it a shot XD!
(And it's all right!)

I have a terrible time with backgrounds, but I've never thought of doing something like this. Very helpful tut, thank you! Love your bottom forest image, btw.
