Description
This is the advanced tutorial, which picks up where the basic tutorial left off.Basic Manga Colouring Tutorial can be found here: [link]
So this tutorial covers several things. Which brushes I use, which colour mode my colour palette is set to, the importance of LIGHT DIRECTION, how to apply textures and basically reveals what a messy painter I am. XD Hopefully some people should be it interesting, though it's very hard to cover all the details so I hope I haven't missed anything deathly important out.
I would like to stress that this tutorial simply explains how I do things. This is just my personal style, and it's not the best style, nor the most complicated and it's not even remotely perfect. I really do encourage people to take some things away from this tutorial and experiment, because everyone has their own unique preferences and I'd like to see people discovering their own style that they're most comfortable with.
I hope some people find this useful in some way.
PS. It's a big file! O_O
PSS. This is also done on a different computer from the first tutorial, so don't mind the change in screen size. XD

Amazing tutorial, just great. The way that I can download it easily in a zipped format is great, and how each step is a different window, so I can view each one seperately instead of having to scroll through on large image. Another thing I like is that you explained things wonderfully, and it was very easy to understand! I cannot thank you enough for this. This tutorial is what I have been looking for for a LONG time.
My gratitude for taking the time out of your life to help people you don't even know paint digitally. BRAVO!

Hey! i really like this tutorial, because it it taught me to do the background first and adding background colors to the shading....
that helps ^^ thanks...
[Dont kill me please? T_T ]
Oh... and P.S. about taking down tuts >_> ....
hey!!! just because there is a good tutorial out there doesn't mean people will be able to use that to achieve a god like ability to color pictures (or copy the style of the maker)... I mean someone could seriously try to imitate Amaretti.... but hes just gonna grow with time.. its human.. >_>.. he would get better and the imitator would fail to keep up.. I try looking at this tutorial and i love it, but i only use the main components i like... tutorials are crutches for starting artists... the more you rely on crutches, the more your set up to crash ^^. ask my father... so please don't take down any tutorial based on thoughts retaining to imitators... because they simply are not the original ^^. [Not simply for this tutorial]

You usually have to clean a page before you colour it (ie. remove text and black areas). Or you can hunt around for pre-cleaned versions done by others especially for colourists.

What operating system did you used when you colored this picture? It doesn't look like any windows version I have seen before, not even Vista.

Thank you so very much for the tutorial, a lot of it was useful. Mostly the lineart part for me, so much more efficient than the way I was doing it, and cleaner too. Best part was the 500 internal server error for one of the browsers in the 9th page of the first tutorial. xD Anyway, straying from the topic, I love the lineart part since your method makes it possible to change the color of the basic lineart. While I knew how to separate it before I could never deal with the white...it did not occur to me to go over it locked with a black brush because I am just that oblivious sometimes. ;_; Hm, being the spaz that I am, I should probably just lock the layer and fill it with black instead of doing it with a brush or I'd probably miss something. x.X
And heh, you caught me at my horrible habit of doing the background after the base colors. Oh, I never thought to use the Hue/Saturation/Brightness sliders for the colors, I always just choose the colors manually for shading. So yes, wonderful tutorial, much love. Even though I don't like the airbrush because I tend rest the pen in one area for too long (hard round on opacity/low jitter works in about the same way though <3), I still learned quite a bit.

Your tutorial is fabulous. I've been struggling to find a straight-forward, user friendly tutorial concerning a softer, more painterly style of cel-ish-shading. All the ones I found previously seem to think I completely understand the dynamics of the softer airbrushes that Photoshop gives you, which I ... don't.
You did an excellent job. I know I'm going to get a lot of use out of this tutorial, and I'm sure many more still will enjoy your more basic tutorial.

I can't find that airbrush pen opacity flow, and I have Photoshop CS D8 Where do I find that?

Amaretti In reply to xPlutoniiumxStephx [2007-07-10 00:04:14 +0000 UTC]
Perhaps you've deleted it accidentally?
It's a default brush, so you should definitely have it. If you open up the brush menu, look for the little arrow in the top right corner that looks like >
A drop down menu will appear and if you select "Reset brushes" you should recover all your basic default brushes.
The Airbrush Pen Opacity Flow brush is size 19. There are only two size 19 brushes in the default set and it is the second one.

I don't think I have ever deleted any brushes....I have Soft Mechanical, and I can click the airbrush button to make it kind of seem like that one(i think), but I'm not sure I have the Airbrush Pen Opacity Flow.... hmm.... which section is it in on yours?

Ok, before you reset your brushes, click 'save brushes' from the same menu and be sure to remember the place where you save them. Then click 'reset brushes' to regain all the default ones, and then click 'load brushes' to load the ones you just saved.

Besides, Amaretti's style is so distinctly his that whenever fans spot similar work, they refer to it as 'the Amaretti style'. Imitators are obviously in debt to him and even if anyone does improve on his style, they'd still be in debt to him.
This is a remarkable achievement and, far from taking away his uniqueness, it serves to elevate him to an even higher level. How many artists have imitated Rembrandt, Michaelangelo and so on? To have others pay homage to you is the ultimate accomplishment and a sure sign that your style will go on to become 'classic' standing the test of time - surely the mark of someone truly talented.
In any case, I believe Amaretti's tutorials will inspire and encourage others, help them to try new things, and give them new ideas as to how they can improve their own developing styles.
