Description Renault FT "Désarmé" - disarmed tanks given a makeshift mantlet sent to fight during the Fall of France

In 1940, during the German invasion of France, large amounts of Renault FTs were still in reserve awaiting processing and modification. Many of the FTs in the depots did not have any armament as they had been given to other troops and more modern armored vehicles in the 1930s. The situation in France was dire and the military needed a way to quickly get the stored Renault FTs a weapon and send them into the fight. An unknown number of FT Désarmé were given a makeshift mantlet and fought during the Fall of France. They were all knocked out during the war or captured by the Germans to be used as field targets or scrap. This variant was simply one of many last-ditch attempts using FT Désarmé to hold out against the Germans for a little while longer. Any armor France still had would be used in the fighting even if it meant they would be sacrificed in order to buy precious time.
