Description Actually, this one does not fit into the "pretties of '06" category because it was made in 2004 - and I still have it.

The stone is a sunstone from the Dust Devil sunstone mine near Plush, Oregon. I got the opportunity to mine there in 2004 after cajoling and the rest of the crew to go on a real rockhounding trip.

What's cool about this material is that it's a clear feldspar that contains copper. You can actually see the stuff shining in it in thin reddish-orange sheens or deep red and green halos. It's very striking material. And the folks that own the mine are some of the kindest, most generous people I've had the chance to meet. Go visit them - you're in for a treat.

This piece was carved by one of the people at Dust Devil. When it got too hot to mine rocks, we bought it and I wrapped it right there because some wag said wire wrapping wasn't "real jewelry."

They asked for lessons after I did this piece.

Wonderful! But no wonder that you'd keep it. How did the flower in it come to be? Was it carved in the back or something? Also, the fact that the gem is translucent makes it that much more interesting.

The flower was carved into one side of the stone and then the other side (the "front") is the polished side you see in the pic.

Sunstone is so beautiful! I hope that you'll get the chance to see some of this in person.
