Description
I sure hope this submits correctly, since i've been using a crappy old scanner and a crappy old comp :^/This is the preliminary sketch for a pic of Sherlock Hound and Irene Adler, from the Miyazaki cartoon Meitantei Holmes/Sherlock Hound, for Skye-Chan!

"...she is THE woman, the ONLY woman to have been postulated as arousing romantic feelings in the Great Detective, and his undying admiration by being the only opponent to ever outsmart him..."
This annoys me...You'll have to point out where you think evidence lies where Sherlock shows romantic feelings for Irene. Frankly I can't think of anywhere where it does so. He did have an admiration that she 'Bested' him but frankly I don't think of it as her 'Outsmarting' him....
*Pratfall* Sorry, if that seems kinda harsh, scoping around all these awesome Sherlock pictures is making me angsty/eager to talk about my views on the stories *None of my friends like Sherlock Holmes so I'm in withdrawal*
Anyways, onto the picture. Frankly it looks great, I wish I could get my hands of a copy of Meitantei Holmes. Clean lines, awesome pose, brava!

It "annoys" you, does it? I hope that my parroting back your own words gives you a clue as to the slightly...immature nature of your critique. I am sorry if THAT sounds harsh, but read below for my reasons as to why I don't appreciate your framework of discussion. And please don't condescend. I am in the process of getting my PhD at an ivy league par university. I'm no genius, but neither am I a bumpkin and I assure you all my remarks come after thorougth research.
Your critique was of my words--and not even of a piece of prose that I submitted as a deviation, but rather an informal description about the artwork's content. Words are not visual art. The only thing that is relevant in discussion to an art website is the art itself. If you are keen on dissecting the many contextual clues for AND against romantic sentiments Holmes felt towards Adler, then let's do that in an appropriate context. In that light, the only remark you made of value to me at deviantArt is the very last, and painfully brief, two sentences about the line work and pose.
This once I will be (one-sidedly) polite and explain my reasoning. But in the future, please do not anticipate me putting myself out to do so. I realize you want to discuss the books, but if you want to discuss them in a mature manner, you will have to do it at the appropriate online forum AND more politely. I don't know how old you are, so I don't really know how much experience you have at scholarly literary debate. So maybe you're just young and I'm being unfair--I'm not a good judge of age with online people. Anyway.
First of all, I do not overtly claim that it is certain that Holmes felt romantically or erotically for Adler--my precise word was "POSTULATED," in other words, supposed, guessed, theorized, but NOT uncontestably proven, by SOME literary scholars that I have read, one of whom is the feminist author Carole Nelson Douglas. If you think Adler cannot outsmart her male equivalent, have a healthy dose of women's lib, in her mystery series. The first book is Good Night, Mr. Holmes, and I urge you to read it. It's certainly possible and even likely that Adler is more than Holmes's equal. At any rate, the typical citation among scholars is that Holmes keeps the coin that Irene gave him for being a witness to her wedding to the barrister Godfrey Norton, as a charm on his pocketwatch chain for years after her supposed death in the Alps. This may be interpreted in two ways: One, it is huis usual garnering and showcasing of a trinket of a worthy opponent, such as a painting of Reichenbach Falls (where he fought and defeated Moriarty). Two, it is his acknowledgment that one woman disproved his distaste for the "fairer sex" and is worthy of his admiration--on more than one level. There are other instances in dialogue with Watson at the beginning and end of the story. Go read it. I don't have time right now to pick it up and write out the quotes for you. If you're a devoted Sherlockian, then I am sure you can read it yourself.
Please frame your future discussions regarding primarily the art at an art website, at least in my gallery. I joined this website as a college graduate of fine arts who wants continuing advice on improvement of my craft. I love Sherlock Holmes work but I don't want to discuss it here. Thank you very much for the courtesy. I mean no harmful words, I am simply replying within the framework of discussion that you yourself established. Again, I appreciate polite and mutually respectful conduct.

Sorry for er...eavesdropping, but I like your personal touch on the characters, as opposed to drawing them exactly like they appear. (Well...even if you drew them exactly, they'd still have your influence, so it would be cool either way.)

Oh thanks! But with Sherlock I can't take credit--I took it directly from a screenshot (I mean maybe it is still my style since I didn't actually TRACE it or anyhting, I still used freehand to copy it, but anyway) The pose is taken from the back cover of the movie "Bed of Roses." Yes I DO like chick flicks, damn it!
And you're not eavesdropping! You're always welcome! And anyway, you've seen the whole series now so you actually know who these people are, lol.

I absolutely adore the intricate details you put into this, like the crosshatching, wrinkles in the clothes, hand detail, Irene's hair and facial features (nose, lips, etc)... hoo I could go on forever.
Of course, this applies for all your work anyway.

But I sincerely think you do awesome at anthro art and painting in general. I mean, you do anatomy, shading, EVERYTHING really well (something I have alot of trouble with, especially anatomy) and I respect that alot.

Thanks I actually am constantly annoyed at how I do Miyazaki-inspired anatomy. Ya see, I tend to want to just draw the anime-style HEADS and NECKS of those anthro doggies, but then do their BODIES in a more photo-realistic proportioning, and I noticed he tends to simplify and exaggerate the proportions of his characters' bodies. And then I wonder if I should just draw like him since I admire him so much and they're not my own characters anyway, or if I should employ my own methods. RARG! *head explodes*

Probably when I drew them, lol!!
Irene never actually appears in the show. She's part of the original author's canon, but in the cartoon, she never shows up Although there is a girl named Ms. Hamilton who behaves suspiciously like her, so you may have seen her.....

YW, don't you love his FACE? I don't usually brag, but I am glad about how his expression turned out, especially considering how he never dares to even touch a woman usually
Heehee, this scene is actually in my next fanfic installation...hopefully I can upload that to FF.net soon!
