EDIT: Please click 'Download' to see the guide (darn you to heck, V5!).Not totally sure I categorized this right, or even if it should be a tutorial at all. I just thought this up one day and have been putting it off for a while. Now I finally made it.
Basically, I want to put this out there because I figured people might find this useful. Heck, who doesn't want some tips on getting pageviews? And the fan avatars are pissing me off for some odd reason...
So yeah... hope this is helpful in some way, and I'm sorry it's mostly text. I know everybody loves those tutorials with the lil' pictures in 'em, but I'm too tired right now. Maybe some other tutorial. But hey, at least there's Bob!
Yes, it says it's a series, but I'm not sure I'll have time to make anymore, what with school starting tomorrow and all that.
[edit] For those who want to change usernames and not waste their accounts, they can now put up their accounts for "adoption" at ~DA-Orphanage . Or adopt one from them! It's your choice. [/edit]

Hmmm, this is some good advice for people who are new. But (and I'm speaking as a deviant surfer here) when I am looking at the comments to pictures, I tend to pay more attention to the comment first, then avatar, then name. That being said, I tend to only visit a person's page if they give good comments, not just the usual "This is amazing!" I look for comments that give a slightly more artistic view. In that case, I would be more apt to go visit their gallery to see their art.
However, when it comes to my own art, I make it a habit to reply to all comments, no matter what they say.
But anyway, this was a nice start. Usernames and avatars can make a huge impression. It makes me glad that I didn't mess up with my username. I'm still uncertain about my avatar, though...

On my friend's journal, I found that one of her friends has an avatar with a stick figure having a spear stab though the neck. I mean, really, who wants a naked bone person as their avatar? (I mean, stick figures are just sticks without clothing.) also so many people that I've seen have stuff like emogurl1874093 im like, whut. T-o decent work. I mean, people with weird usernames like lahbafslj2354-0 is just wrong, seriously, get a username that some person can actually remember! they should tell something about yourself, but not set a bad affect.
avatars really do set a bad affect on some people. I've seen a person with like curiousboomer and i was like...whut....and i saw the avatar, very weird. fat person with a weird fish sound mouth. T-T im not aimin on anyone, just saying logic sense. and i like that you put bob in

Fan avatars are ok in some cases, usually when the source is obscure enough (e.g. mineβrecognize that guy?). But I'm a writer, not a visual artist, so I should be forgiven.

And I like my avatar (though gonna change it soon) XD I think it's pretty cool. But idk about my name, I like it but it wasn't my first choice, all the ones I wanted first where taken and the accounts are dead! I hate dead accounts that waste good names...

I think I can agree with everything you said, But there is one thing I would like to add to it:
The signature section.
Some people have the coolest sigs ever, like an old quote or something that's really well thought out and/or has alot of meaning behind it(there's many more types that work really well, the old quotes are just my personal favorite). then there's those ones like "if you're one of the X% of people in the world who have done...."blah, blah, blah...You get the point. Then there's those ones that are just "come see my gallery!" or something like that, If I wanted to see your gallery, I would click on your name to see it! Now don't get me wrong there are some that are really creative too that lure you to their gallery, and for those, those I say congrats to. they deserve a view for the sig. lastly, there are those ones where people try to make some kind of pic with the characters...this doesn't work! DA does do indentations to allow these pics to look right. and the bunny thing, the bunny just needs to go find a dark hole to go curl up and die in! the bunny has been WAY over used!
take my sig for example, I have two quotes, one is a funny one that is designed to lure you to one of my fav pieces of my art by use of a Monty Python reference while the other is a more serious, deeper, well though out quote with some real meaning behind it.
I say, put some real though into it, make it a small reflection of yourself for people to see and not just some random, pointless blather that your buddy's buddy though was funny while the two of 'em were stoned out of their minds...

nother note about avatars I think that if it's one from a set a pretty popular one it wouldn't be too benificial cause then you might be lumped together with one of "those x avatar people" not too original... even if you really like it... also don't steal avatars... it's just stupid and... not nice

I figured it was pretty useful. But... I'm not the greatest in the world (actually not even a good one, but an artist never the less) but I too am a writer; in fact a fan-fiction (and a tiny bit of a freelance) writer.
I should probably change my avatar, I have had it for nearly a year, but the damn 50X50 rule is annoying. Kinda hard for a person such as myself.
I really don't consider this very funny, kinda funny to an extent, but in all honesty; it's more aggravating to us already a Deviant people. But never the less; useful and informative. DeviantART should really put a link for new deviants to these before putting their info. Especially this one. I read another "Guide To DeviantART" a few months ago, but it was more of a joke.
