I made this entirely in GIMP and the fella icons are courtesy of `JurgenDoe

thanks for the DD! it's my very first!

update:
Hi everyone! I've found out (from the admins) that owning more than one account on dA is definitely allowed. The only occasion it will get you in trouble is if you are suspended or banned and are trying to avoid punishment.

It's a great idea to make tutorials about DA, really brilliant! And it's nicely done

Juste a question : why, before username, there are signs like this : "=", "~", "*", ">" etc... ?
What they means?

Thanks!

You're welcome and thank you
I was going to do an explaination of those symbols as well in a seperate tut, but since you asked I'll tell you anyway
Every deviant with a basic membership (not premium) gets a tilly in front of their name(~). Deviants who have premium membership have an asterisk (*). If that premium member is a beta tester, a person who gets to try out newer features and reports bugs on them, will have an equals symbol ( = ). Members who've shown outstanding community love are awarded "deviousness" the title of senior member, and get a check symbol ('), former staff also have this symbol. Volunteer Gallery moderators have a hat symbol (^). Volunteer Staff members have the at symbol (@). The General Admins have the plus symbol (+). The Creative Team staff have the cents symbol (Β’). The people employed by dA have the dollar sign symbol ($). Officially run dA pages have the pound symbol (Β£). Lastly, a banned person has an exclamation point (!). Hope that helps you out

It's perfectly all right to make and maintain more than one account, if they're on different e-mail addresses. What is strictly not allowed is making another account to get around a ban.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xadrea In reply to Vanshira [2010-06-06 02:25:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes that is clearly stated, though I have read in the rules (sometime last year I think) that running two accounts was punishable by banning as well. However, there is an exception to clubs and stock accounts. I think that's because it can be considered site abuse.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vanshira In reply to Xadrea [2010-06-07 00:45:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, I re-read the ToS just now, and couldn't find any mention of multiple accounts being prohibited, but FAQ #221: I was banned, is there anything I can do? specifically mentions that bans apply to all a user's accounts (opening up the possibility that the user had multiple accounts legally, and that that had nothing to do with the ban).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xadrea In reply to Vanshira [2010-06-07 02:45:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, yes, I've long since read that. I sent in a ticket to the help desk for a more clear answer. I'm positive that exploitation of the site by using multiple accounts for gaining popularity and all that would be considered site abuse, and of course you would get in trouble for trying to make a new account if you are in the suspension or banning process. Pretty much, if seems shady, don't try it is my policy.

what? how is making another account against the terms of service? in the help desk in the response to asking about changing account names it says you can't change names, but you can make another account. i know loads of people who have changed accounts, some of them popular artists

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xadrea In reply to lungburger [2010-06-06 02:26:58 +0000 UTC]

Running more than one account is what can get you in trouble, not moving one to a different one. In that case, it's allowed and understood

How do you make pictures bigger if the artists doesn't allow downloading????
V7 made the pictures smaller.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Xadrea In reply to cyberReplica [2010-06-06 02:27:58 +0000 UTC]

The auto resizing is a little troublesome, but if the artist has uploaded a small file size, there's really no way to view it larger.

It's not common that we share real names?

What about people who have been on site eight years (myself), discontinued their old account and remade one because he'd rather have his real name as an account?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xadrea In reply to AndrewDBarker [2010-06-06 02:30:28 +0000 UTC]

Moving to a new account is totally allowed, so you're perfectly fine And I suppose most people like to maintain a sense of anonymity while they are still new

Β Β  Although I'm an old hand with this stuff, it actually told me something I didn't know, and warned me of a line I might've otherwise innocently crossed without knowing; actively running multiple accounts can get one !Banned!
Β Β  The thing is, I'm thinking of moving to a new account, because this username is really starting to annoy me; but I was planning on doing so gradually; for a time, I would have been active on both accounts!
Β Β  I already have two or three PLZs in my name, which is - officially anyway - bending the rules as it stands; I'd hate to be banned for my ignorance!
Β Β  I know, Community Relations is understanding enough to keep me out of that scary exclamation mark, but I'd still rather not risk it. It does mean I have to re-adjust my plans, though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Xadrea In reply to ReyvinVinnex [2010-06-06 02:33:23 +0000 UTC]

I've done a bit of research on that topic today and put in a ticket to the help desk as well for a more clear cut answer, and as it stands, making a new account to change names and abandoning the old one is perfectly fine Stock accounts, and clubs are allowed, and it looks like unoffically plz accounts fall under it too. I think as long as it doesn't look like site abuse or anything fishy the site moderators will be understanding

It's can't be true that multiple accounts are against DA policy or lots and lots of people would've been banned. I think it's against policy to make a new account if your old one is banned.

I can't see why anyone would need this kind of tutorial. Not that I find your work to be bad, but I would find it easier to actually click on a tab to see where it leads than finding a tut explaining it.

(yeah, I know, I just posted a mean and useless comment, I feel sorry for that... really)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xadrea In reply to vieug [2010-06-05 15:00:28 +0000 UTC]

For someone entirely new to using deviantArt, it will take more than a day to find out what all the links and buttons mean in their userbar. It seems useless to us because we already know what we are doing. It's like sitting someone who has never used Microsoft Word down and telling them to "figure it out." It's not really fair. I'm not mad btw, I'm just explaining that flying by the seat of your pants doesn't always come naturally

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

vieug In reply to Xadrea [2010-06-06 00:02:17 +0000 UTC]

For someone entirely new to dA, it will take even more time to find your tuto. Seriously, if you can't guess what those tabs are for on you own, I really doubt you'll ever be able to find this submission.

On a more positive note, your other tutorials are quite interesting. I'm just curious why this one got a DD while, to me, it's certainly the least informative.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xadrea In reply to vieug [2010-06-06 02:21:50 +0000 UTC]

The thing is, new users are seeing it because of the group I'm involved in
This tutorial is more essential than the others, I think, because you can survive being on dA and never using an emoticon or learning to use the browsing features
