Well, I draw manga, so this technique wouldn't look to good on the skin, but it definitely is a great technique, and it explains somethings to me that I've tried to achieve. Thanks a lot for these tutorials.

Could you recommend any basic supplies for starting watercolor painting? (P.S. I've never painted seriously before, though I have some old brushes from my family some watercolor paints in my room somewhere.)

well if you've got brushes and a pan of watercolors i'd say that you're set to begin already of course you'll need watercolor paper (or cardstock) to work on and if you want to be fully prepared, go out and buy a few tubes of basic colors (cadmium red, lemon yellow, ect) and a new pan to work with

Great i'm so happy. Can i ask you another thing? Do you know anything about finding the different opacity paints, I'm finding I'm buying transparent colors all the time by mistakes. I don't mind transparent colors, i just don't always want to use them was wondering if you get that alot too.

a lot of the time paint doesn't go on opaque because it doesn't really work that way especially acrylics. however, there is a difference in student, studio, and artist paints. student grade stuff is tolerable, but the pigment is very light, studio grade is much better, and artist grade is the best! another thing is that you're not buying say "lemon yellow light" or anything like that

Well honestly I've been getting Blick artist brands mostly. but I do get some winsor newton mostly gouache, golden, liquitex, when i get a coupon/sale.
Either way i think I might be doing something wrong. Especially when my paints turn dark like that....

blick's brands really aren't very good i bought 12 sheets of their watercolor paper thinking i was snagging a deal a few months ago, i tried out one sheet and the stuff is awful! it acted almost like wet drawing paper, it buckled like no one's business and tore far too easily to be true watercolor paper, even recycled watercolor paper is better than their brand!

thanks and you're welcome! it's not as daunting as it seems! as long as you begin with a warm base tone, skin usually comes out looking pretty good! a lot of people actually use the wet on dry technique for painting skin, but i feel you get very little warmth in the skin with that technique because of the white of the paper
