Drawing Zebras with scratchboard

several species of African equids (horse family) united by their distinctive black and white striped coats. Their stripes come in different patterns, unique to each individual. They are generally social animals that live in small harems to large herds . Unlike their closest relatives, horses and donkeys , zebras have never been truly domesticated .

This work definitely shows a large amount of skill and a careful attention to detail resulting from years of practice and hours of painstaking dedicated work. The subject matter was, in my opinion, a perfect choice for this medium, what with the black, white, and shades of gray that form between them. I especially appreciate your fine use of chiaroscuro (the use of a full range of value to create shading) in the nose of the zebra. My critiques are minor, but I figured that since you requested critiques you wanted all suggestions and constructive criticisms possible. The zebra(s) shown are carefully crafted to be anatomically accurate and convincing to the eye of the viewer, though I think that in some places, such as a few small areas on the face the work could use a bit more light values in order to make the face seem fully round and dimensional. There are (relatively) large swaths of the white areas of he face that are very similar values, and I feel that adding some more lights would have contributed to the dimensional feel of the work, like what you did in the background stripes. I also feel that making a light source more apparent would have improved this aspect of the work. As a viewer, I am not quite sure where it's meant to be coming from, and adding more clear indications as to where it would be would have worked together with the lighter values I previously suggested to create a dimensional look. Like I said, these are not major issues. The work shows a high level of skill that I hope to achieve someday. Overall, great work!
