Author's Note: Not a ton of deviations or edits to do in this one, which is essentially half of the original first chapter. Okay, let me state real quick that I do very much like the original composition of the story, but after some recent short-story writing I want to round this one off. I'm perfectly willing to share the original but then I'd just be linking to SPOILERS and we can't have that.
Obviously some more heavy-handed direct imagery describing our mousey boy here and some nods to his motivation for coming. A friend who has edited some of my work before once talked to me about good places where to cut chapters to make them more palatable. It isn't so much about length as it is finding a good spot in the content to cut it and move onto the next. If you've read Marsh Silas, then you know my average chapters are 6,000+ words which is usually between 14-16 pages depending on formatting. Because this is a short story/novella, I wanted to make the chapters a bit shorter, so I took some time figuring out where to cut it. If I were to compose vastly shorter chapters, the opening of the drawbridge would have sufficed, but that was too slim, and cutting it here when the undead mice reveal themselves provided a chunk of length and a good break between the rising tension and the action to come, so we can better focus on that next chapter. This is the mechanical/scientific aspect of writing that I quite enjoy!
As with this story, here's some tidbits about the lore for ye!
- crulka: a bird-like animal raised on farms and harvested for meat
- ulsk: prized liquor favored by the upper class
- Festival of Pyres: a celebration held by mice four times a year to celebrate the passage of the seasons. Food is shared, music played, dances conducted, and bonfires are burned as a symbol of the population's gratitude and lifted spirits.
