Description
On this day, 70 years ago a task force of ten ships left Japan for a one way trip for Okinawa, they never made it as they were pounded until three fifths of the taskforce was sunk which included the Battleship Yamato, light cruiser Yahagi and destroyers, Isokaze, Hamakaze, Asashimo and Kasumi. The remaining four destroyers returned to Japan. Two of the surviving destroyers, Fuyuzuki and the Hatsushimo were later sunk by US air dropped mines, the latter was also the last ship to be sunk during the war. Suzutsuki which had her bow blown off was never repaired. Yukikaze escaped practically unscathed hence the nicknames "Lucky Ship" for surviving the war and "Grim Reaper" as for surviving a battle where the ships that accompanied her did not.In this picture, the top for are:
(From the left) Tone, Haruna, Hibiki and Nagato
The bottom three are:
(From the left) Yahagi, Yamato and Hamakaze.
