Description
A spithret in its natural environment: A temperate forest on the equator of the planet Mars.I thought I'd do something a little more interesting with pose and composition for this piece, and overall I'm satisfied with it. Still, I feel like there's room for improvement, especially in the tree-trunk area.

They've gone feral in parts of North America, so obtaining one shouldn't be too difficult (supposing you have wormhole clearance). Just be careful of fluffy's sticky secretions when you're hugging him

Hmm. I like the creature design. Are those caterpillar pro-legs on the abdomen/tail? I like the combination of mandibles and ears.
You could create more of an impression of fur if you fiddled with the borders of the shadows and light (making them jagged).
As far as composition goes...I think you could cut off that left side of the picture with the tree. I like pictures that are tall and narrow (but that may just be me). If you're looking for stylistic inspiration, how about something...like...this: [link]

Yeah, I fiddled with the shadows a little bit trying to get them jagged without success. I'll try some more.

A suggestion for the shadows. Why not turn the brush to half opacity, then draw a big hunk of hair. Then select its outline, drag the outline over the edge of the shadow (transform the outline shape to match where you want the border of the shadow to be), then pres delete.

You can still probably make a jagged shape with your lasso tool and use it to delete hair-shaped holes from the shadows.
