do you do a sketch first with these? or lay the paint - or colour rather - straight down in blocks?

ah cool, nice one. yeah only the vaguest sketch i see. i was wondering cos i'm experimenting with painting styles atm... and found some things more difficult than others to realise without any initial line work.

Cool I'm still experimenting as well, through all my different approaches, I've found that I can't live without establishing the big shapes first. For me that's faster than line because line can be confusing sometimes since it almost always "reads" as a container, rather than something solid. Both work for me but its like a cleaner feeling for me and less confusing, I dunno if that makes sense.
