Well, it's quite difficult to understand if the chinstrap bails of this helmet are made from a brass gauge as in the British Mark I Brodie or from a steel gauge as in the American U.S. P17

I question the effectiveness of the German Geade Skull cap.

I agree, it was a palliative, in reality it could be used to shelter from a shrapnell pellet, but the temples, the nape and the ears were not protected

weren't the Turkish helmets visor-less so they could touch their forehead to the ground during prayer?

AndreaSilva60 In reply to TeslaTitanicX [2017-07-29 07:02:07 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it was provided by the German allied, as it was for the Bulgarian Army.
The Turkish one was without visor, in accordance with the Turkish custom on hats.

After the Great War, the Irish Army adopted the Stahlheim, produced by Vickers Ltd. on captured German machinery. These were worn until the start of WWII, when the Brodie was used. Most of the surviving helmets have dents in them because of the thin metal they were made of. They were not designed for combat.

I've seen a photo of Irish soldiers that wore the Stahlhelm, but I thought they were a british booty of war sold to Ireland.

It was so much better for a helmet enthisiest back then.
Now the US makes an excessive amount of the same type and everyone else either copies them or uses their surplus.

I like the Portugal Helm for its archaic design.I think it is the direct descendant of the cabasset .

out of all of them I honestly prefer the Austro-Hungarian Berndorfer (they were honestly my favourite nation during ww1...then Finland and Other axis nations became my favourites of the ww2 era)

Italian called it "paperino" that means "little duck", because seen from above it looks so.
I like the Berndorfer too, of course being italian I'can't agree about your favourite Empire, while I agree about Finland.

As I read from the Osprey Publishing's book about the Arditi,
the Italian-made Adrian modèle 1915 helmets were simpler to make, consisting of two pieces assembled (without counting the crest)
rather than three for the French-made. But it was also, alas, much less sturdy than the French-made example.
I wonder why.

Oh Yes, You're right, different steel and lesser thickness, there are lots of photos showing dents in the helmet or bent viewers.
In 1917 there was a parliamentary question whether it was better to give the soldiers a trench or if it was cheaper to t treat the sick ones

What??!
There really a parliamentary question in the Kingdom of Italy that was "Trench or treatment?"
How could such a question even be thought about?!

Didn't any of those members of the parliament had sons, nephews who were in the armed forces, holding the front lines?

Yes, a real shame, as the cardbord sole of the Alpini in Russia during WW2.
Sometimes I think that Beresina was a defeat for Italians of the Cisalpine Republic too ............

There were many frauds and little control, in reality the state paid the shoes for good, while there was very little wool, also because of the sanctions after the Ethiopian war and sweaters were made of synthetic wool, called Lanital, which was produced from casein, and they not very warming.

The Portugese helmet looks hilariously enough like modern construction helmets.
Seriously though, this is all very well. My favourite is probably the Stahlhelm.
