Ah, the M1 Garand. Still my favorite rifle. They say that Beretta made the finest ones before switching to the BM.59. Beretta-made Garands are very prized in America.

M1 Garand was a good rifle, and the rifle that along Stg 44 gave birth to AK-47.

It was my indivisual weapon during my military service, it was considered obsolete, but I was an artillery specialist,Β
so we received second line weapons,
then Italy experimented a low intensity civil war, and we were issued with the Beretta FAL, an Italian version of the American M14,
because terrorists assaulted two barracks and a powder keg.

Aside from weapons captured from the Italian police and army, any other weapons used by the communist and fascist paramilitaries during the Years of Lead?

Do you know the Anni di Piombo? Great!
Fascist didn't do important military actions, but they did many explosive attacks against the population,
they hadΒ connection withΒ diverted secret services and organized crime, e maybe the Stay Behind arsenals,
so they had their flows ofΒ pistols above all and plastic military explosives.
Many communist terrorists had been trained in Czechoslovakia,
and they did actions of particular relevance, the most important being the kidnapping of the prime minister and the killing of all the escort,
and frequently used the Skorpion Cz 61 submachine gun.
The communists could count on the secret deposits of weapons of the second world war,
preserved by former partisan for a possible revolution,
which with the end of communism often ended up in the underworld circuit.

Aye, I do know of it - it was a pretty big moment in the Cold War for Western Europe, and for once not happening overseas away from their borders. Turkey had their own Anni di Piombo too.
What kinds of pistols were used by the Neo-Fascists? Berettas? And funny that they worked with organized crime. You'd think the Mafia would still hate fascists, with Mussolini sending the Blackshirts into Sicily and bragging about displaying caged gangsters in zoos.
Doing some checking, that definitely explains things. Czechoslovakia sold weapons to anyone and anybody despite being part of the Eastern Bloc. As with resistance movements all over Europe during WW2, communists proved to be among the most effective and disciplined cells. There were quite a few who quietly disobeyed the party order to work with the new democratic governments and not launch a revolution straightaway, and buried their weapons. I'm guessing that the Communists got hold of Karabiner 98ks, MP40s, MAB 38As, Carcanos...

There was a large Night Vision scope made for the M-1 Carbine during WW2.Β You can see the Thrush Agents using it on 1960s spy show "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.".Β The M5 Greece Gun was like the M3, except you could change out the barrel to shoot the German 9mm ammo.Β The "Daisy-Mae" M-1941 Bonnie Hat was also known as a "Flop Hat".Β It was based on the WW1 era brown Denim "Sun Hat".Β There was a 1930s era blue Denim version for the DungreeΒ work uniform.Β The 1941 to 1942 produced olive drab green hats were made of "H.B.T." Herringbone Twill material.Β It was not Denim.Β There is also a different style Tommy Gun for Jungle fighting.

I really like the Daisy Mae bonny hat, there is aΒ photo of a sitting American Cavalry man wearing it who is armed with a Springfield M1903, in my mind it's one of the beautiful WW2 military portrait. Do you know if the name of the hat come from Li'l Abner wife?

nicholasweed In reply to AndreaSilva60 [2019-08-10 04:29:48 +0000 UTC]
Yes.Β That is where the nickname comes from.Β Most soldiers would wear the brim of the hat flipped up like Littl Abner's Hillbilly wife in the comic.Β The book "SANFU : Sailor, Airman, And Soldier Slang Of World War II", says, 'flop hatΒ Β The OD herringbone twill hat worn in tropical areas. Also "Daisy Mae hat".'
As I have said, there was a brown Denim version in WW1 called a "Sun Hat".Β It would be warn with the tan khaki Summer uniform.Β There were two M-1912 Army uniforms.Β The tan khaki Summer uniform, and the Winter wool olive drab green uniform.Β In the 1930s there was a blue denim work uniform called Dungarees.Β That is where fatigues came from.Β The Herring Bone Twill (H.B.T.) uniform was the first fatigues.Β The H.B.T. material was a type of Rip-Stop.Β Herringbone Twill was mainly used in WW2 and the Korean War.Β Some was still used in the Vietnam War.Β There was a latter Vietnam War type of Bonnie Hat that had a cylinder shaped top with loops for holding shot gun shells.Β The older M-1941 Daisy Mae hats could still be used in Vietnam.Β The U.S. Military use to care more about saving tax payer dollars, and tried to reuse things, or issue older items.Β If you watch M*A*S*H, the nurser wear the Daisy Mae hats, and the men wear the M-1951 Cap.Β The Nurses wear the M-1941 type of hat because of the feminine name "Daisy Mae".Β But some men could still wear them.Β Doctor Benjamin "Hawk Eye" Pierce still used theΒ Daisy Mae hat.Β The WW1 M-1941 hat has three sizes, Small, Medium, and Large.Β I wear a size medium one every day.Β Keeps the sun out of my eyes.Β Is a little faded and warn for an over 75 year old hat.Β But I still wear it every day.

The time of war often imposes conservative choices, American infantry platoons already had a very high firepower, as they were supported by mortars and heavy machine guns, and the ammunitions were distributed with an abundance unknown to most other armies, however it would have been a very good weapon.

Had such weapon used in WW2, infantry formation for the American forces would somewhat resemble today - soldiers armed with Thompson Light Rifle and Browning Automatic Rifle, with M1 Garand used as designated marksman rifle

Nice. My grandfather used to always tell me about the M3's rate of fire. Always used to say you could chopped down a tree with enough ammo.
