Description My entry and idea for the Smart Car contest.

A Smart Car with a Chalkboard paint job.. because what's smarter than a car with a Chalkboard paint job?

Rustoleum (and other such companies) make paint that you can paint onto metal, wood, plastic, hardboard, glass or paperboard and it's as good as a chalkboard.

Don't believe me? Here's two links: [link] for the paint, and [link] for the spray on version.

So, what I propose, is a Smart Car, with a paint job of this kind of paint.

Why?

You can customize it any way you like, and the next time it rains or you take it into the car wash, the chalk will wash off and you can start with a new design!

It's truly, a Smart Car.

As far as judging goes? Here's why I'm hoping the judges will understand why I express the want/need for a Chalkboard paint job Smart Car:

Originality in Expressing the Theme: You the owner of the car get to express whatever you're feeling whenever you draw on your Smart Car with chalk. Open your mind. Express whatever theme your heart desires.

Visual Impact: What do you want your car's visual impact to be? Now you can decide. Draw on your car! Does it change day to day? Does it stay the same? How do you want your car to show off your personality?

Technical Skill: If you've got an ounce of artistic skill, you can draw on it and make a visual impact and express yourself the way you want.

Enjoy!

AdB.

PS: The transparency on the preview is a little weird, if you full view it it sorts itself out. I'm not sure why it does this.

Yours wasn't chosen, but this one is a semifinalist [link]

Which was clearly submitted after mine.

Someone saw the idea and took it. If anyone should be featured as a semi-finalist, it's me. The Chalkboard concept was entirely my own.

No. I don't see it as being a rip off of your idea.

Also, the reason why yours was probably not looked at twice was because they're looking for a skin. Not a new paint type to paint their cars.

This happens to great artists sometimes too. Don't read the rules, do something irrelevant, and 'poof', you're out of the competition.

I've seen some absolutely gorgeous art done in chalk, so this could be fun. Or you could do math problems and chemistry equations.

most definitely something you would see driving around Berkley! This car would be covered in stick figures and tie-dye scribbles! aaand probably some pinwheels glued on XD

My guess is that the "skin" is going to be a vehicle wrap, not a paintjob.

You never know.

The contest thing says "The first-place design for an epic smart car skin will be printed, put on a smart car, and taken on the smart car Street Tour!"

You could print strips of this stuff as it's good on metal, wood, plastic, hardboard, glass or paperboard, and wrap it around the Smart Car, and then just doodle away just like a real chalkboard.

That is the giveaway. You can't print chalkboard. I worked for a sign company for a few years and we did vehicle graphics. It's all done on a computer that prints inks on vinyl.

Your idea is creative though.

I think they're going to be doing some kind of plastic cover for the Smart Car's sections that snap on and off like LEGO pieces. I've seen the mods they allow for them, and they're quite amazing.

I quite love the Smart Car.

They digitally print vinyl with adhesive on the back and apply them like big stickers.

Interesting.

It'd be interesting to see if the chalkboard paint stuff would work on vinyl.. wouldn't it?

This is a brilliant. You could have a different car style for every day, and if you break down or get load, you can entertain yourself with naughts and crosses

Excellent idea, good luck with the contest

very creative. my only question would be how eco-friendly is chalk, if it were just washing away all over the place, how wind resistant is chalk? what about those 97degree summer days, will chalk bake onto it? if chalkboard holds chalk so well wouldn't it also collect dirt and dust? just something to think about

AndrewDBarker In reply to DARRYL-SMITH [2010-07-11 10:36:03 +0000 UTC]

Chalk is VERY eco-friendly.

It's formed from Limestone itself. So it comes from the earth. From the earth, to our cars. Chalk doesn't bake on to sidewalks when it's on hot summer days when kids draw on them..

You've got to remember that.

good answer i am still not convinced about the exposure to the weather thing though, concrete is not chalkboard, and what about the dirt, and even worse the bugs and bird poo!

I use this stuff on my walls at home, and it's extremely, extremely resistant to dirt and bugs, and bird droppings. It cleans with soap and water. It's extremely washable.
