Created this as part of an assignment for my Concept Art class. The subject matter involved a list of song titles and I found myself gravitating towards 'Puff the Magic Dragon' by Peter, Paul, & Mary. At first, and I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, I thought this song was a metaphor for certain illegal substances that are out there (i.e. pot). Fortunately I decided to look up the lyrics before I started putting brush to paper. And what did I find? I found probably one of the saddest song subjects I have ever read about. To be concise, it is a song about the inevitable loss of innocence and about how, even though we grow older and forget about our youthful dreams and put them on the side, those same dreams are still there waiting for us to visit them again. And so, I tried to catch that wistful, imaginative, and all-too-temporary feeling in this painting.
