Description
"It was very dreary being a dragon. He shuddered whenever he caught sight of his own reflection ... He hated the huge, bat like wings, the saw-edged ridge on his back, and the cruel, curved claws. He was almost afraid to be alone with himself and yet he was ashamed to be with the others."-Voyage of the Dawn Treader

This is one of the best scenes in The Chronicles of Narnia. It always stood out throughout the years for me since it shows the greatest change in any of the characters - in more ways then one. I'm so happy i did this painting, this image has been in my head for so long - I'm so glad its on paper now

Thank you! This is definitely one of my favorites as well You don't see changes like this so drastically in many stories (both literally and metaphorically). It's really one of the most touching moments in the entire series!

Just saw it for the first time too---I procrastinate seeing films! These scenes were really something to see and the "attack" film score that accompanies the first views of him.
This is a fine painting you have made and really looks like a storybook work.

Thank you! This was one of the first paintings I really wanted to do when I started seriously several years ago. Although they changed a lot around in the movie, I still enjoyed it very much.

I like the story...in the book he was in this form for about 2 chapters and turned back before leaving the island...in the movie the curse lasted until after he helped to destroy a sea monster...both times he was turned back by Aslan.

It's definitely one of the most memorable scenes in the book. I'm happy with how they worked it more into the story. Usually movies are changed too much, but I thought voyage was done very well

I think Eustace is one of my favorite Narnia Characters. He and Edmund. I like underdogs for some reason.

DavidHoffrichter In reply to Kateribethrose [2011-05-28 05:22:02 +0000 UTC]
Yea, I can't blame you with those two. Eustace really is the character that grew on me the most throughout the books. We know so much about Peter, Edmund, Susan, and Lucy, yet Eustace is as strong of a character as any. Probably "matured" throughout the books more than anyone in my opinion

Eustace-the-dragon how he ought to look!
I'm aware you created this before Walden Media made the screenplay/creature concepts. You drew him how i've always imagined him from the book. Wonderful work!

That's awesome! I'm happy it struck home with you You have no idea how long I waited for the movie to come out after I painted this to see if I would be "close". If I had to pick a single spot in the entire series that was my favorite, this would be it
Thanks for the great comment

I remember seeing the old BBC Wonderworks version of this and ever since then, I've loved the transformation of Eustace. I saw the movie the other day and was thoroughly enchanted. I didn't want it to end!
And now here I find a wonderful work of art showing the most unlikely of friendships, but also the most powerful. Thank you for sharing. You've got a really nice talent there.

Thanks for the great comment and compliment, Jason! I agree, the classic BBC Narnia movies were great! The silver chair was my personal favorite from those movies (They were so campy
) I haven't seen the new Narnia movie but I hear it's as good as the first one. 'Voyage' was my favorite book to begin with.
I appreciate sharing my work when I get feedback like this - makes it worth it!

Yes, the original movies were very campy, but even back then, I loved Reepicheep. I got a kick out of Warwick Davis showing up in Prince Caspian because I could remember him still as Reepicheep in his amusing costume!
I only vaguely recall the Silver Chair, mostly just the scene where Eustace tells Jill Pole about Narnia, and then how he gets the one dragon to fly away and saying he understands dragons.
I highly recommend the new Narnia movie. My only complaint is that it should have been twenty to thirty minutes longer so we could feel the journey with them a bit more, and to build up the darkness some more too.
When it comes to work like this, I cannot help but try to show my appreciation this way. I really hope to see more someday.
Merry Christmas!

That's good news that the movie was excellent albeit short. I have no idea how I haven't seen it yet, I keep getting delayed!
The production quality for the first set of movies was excellent considering they were still using big puppets for the creatures (Although, I miss that now). I remember how cheesy the acting was but when I look back, they were really solid films (and talk about long).
Once again, I appreciate the compliment! Merry Christmas to you too!

We were delayed too, but after the madness of catching Harry Potter opening weekend, we figured it wasn't so big a deal as missing the opening week. But if we want them to make Silver Chair, we have to keep the ticket sales going strong!
The BBC movies were cheesy, but they were good for us when we were younger, and certainly helped me develop a love for Narnia.
Thank you so much! May the Christmas Season be bright and full of joy for you and yours!

I agree, they were talking about how to even consider making Prince Caspian, that 'The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe' needed to make at least 60 million. I'm not sure how Voyage has done so far but with all the great reviews I've been hearing I'd be surprised if they didn't create at least one more film (hopefully more )
I personally can't stand opening weekends though. I've been to enough of them to realize all the worst/loudest movie goers go the first few days. When I saw last year's HP film it was a mess!
Hope your Christmas was good, what you get

And we do have to remember that when Prince Caspian didn't do as well as they hoped, Disney dumped the franchise. I think that was a silly mistake which I hope Twentieth Century Fox is reaping the rewards of. I would love to go see VTD a second time; it is certainly worth it.
I'm not sure how well it has done overall, but it made another almost 11 million last weekend. That should put it closer to the 100 million mark.
I know what you mean about opening weekends. I will definitely think twice before I do that again!
Christmas was very nice for us, though my wife did get a little sick so we had to head home early. Still, was very nice spending as much time as I did with my family.
I hope your Christmas was full of many blessings!
