Description
[link]Who didn't love the Toa Inika? [link] Launched in a rather thrilling year in 2006 against the fearsome Piraka, wielding light-up swords, multi-launch Zamor launchers, super posability, lightning-infused power, living Kanohi, accompanying music from the All-American Rejects, a fun ARG/Sweepstakes involving said band (from which I won the AAR's album for Move Along, which I'm listening to to choose the fitting music I linked to above), and best of all, the fact they're some of our favorite Matoran turned towards the honor of being Toa! That's not something that all Matoran get thar (though not all necessarily need it, as awesome as they may be. I find the Chronicler's Company to have something better if they remain Matoran).
I was admitedly disappointed a bit when they became Toa Mahri in 2007. Not because of their set design, mind you. Their change was a transformation that removed several of their cool and unique Inika traits (the swords, Kanohi, lightning powers). And instead of that, they become simple water breathers (I'm STILL peeved about that. C'mon, look at the Mahri [link] and tell me they're meant to be water breathers! I understand story features don't have to be completely co-related to set appearances, but for the love of Mata Nui, how could you just brush aside a clear and present scuba theme like that?!?!?). Now don't get me wrong, they were cool in their own right (ESPECIALLY the sets themselves), but they lost something that made the Inika great, in my opinion.
Thus, the purpose of these MOCs. First taking an assumption from the Mahri mini-movie ([link] ) as canon, that being the Mahri's new forms being somewhat artifactial, water-breathing included (their new bodies could be excused as new armor. Hey, it worked for the Toa Nuva in Phantoka/Mistika forms, amiright?), I take the assumption that at one point, the Toa Mahri take a moment to don some of their Inika gear again, and create a sort of hybrid look between their two forms.
Hewkii, at far left, takes back most of his Inika armor & Kanohi Sanok aside from a few addons here & there, and uses two Laser Axes with Climbing Chains, this time with staffs (admitedly, this is just me liking such a weapon & armor look better over his somewhat silly-looking Mahri form). Hahil, rather benefiting from Mahri armor being a Toa of Water & all that, keeps her basic Mahri form, Kanohi Faxon & Protosteel Talons, though dons back her Inika colors & Laser Harpoon. Jaller goes for most of his Inika armor, but adds some gold and uniquely redons his Matoran form's Kanohi Hau (an artifact of the late Truaga Lhikan, retrieved from its loss in Karzahni by the Toa Nuva), and uses both his Inika Energized Flame Sword and Mahri Power Sword. Kongu goes for his Inika armor & Kanohi Suletu with Mahri colors, and uses his old Laser Crossbow with one of his Cordak Blasters. Lastly, Nuparu keeps his Mahri Kanohi Volitak & aquatic armor, but dons back some Inika armor with most of its accompanying weapons (Laser Drill, Claws, shoulder-mounted Zamor Launcher).
I call this set of versions of them, Toa Mahrinika, mixing their team names as cleanly as their bodies. It's not the cleanest mix, but it brings back a lot of what I feel made the Inika great to the Toa Mahri, and I like to imagine they might've gone for this loadout shortly before Teridax's Reign. Whether it would show up in the Chronicler's Company story where their current canon state of being hypnotized to serve a giant Golidlocks fusion is still to be determined.
Also, wouldn't Kongu make a good deputy leader for the team? Hewkii never struck me as much of a leader, and Kongu has been said to be just as much of a leader as Jaller is.

It is stated that Jaller got his noble hau back after the 2010 line. Though it is not known if he,wears it rather than his great arthron.

this sort of hybrid build is actually a really swell idea. is the Hau from the Stars line, or is it one of the 2002 gold masks?

who DIDN'T? well, me for starters due to the fugly designs, masks fusing with their faces, their one note weapons and launchers, jaller and kongu were unrecognizably hideous, goodness they were bad. the mahri were a step up in terms of looks, not gonna lie. its just that they're all underwater and seemed only hahli would be effective there. some weren't given much thought like kongu who just got two of the years gimmick launchers instead of his own weapon, jaller got some pet crab, hahli and matoro got claws, hewki got himself a spear...and whats with his chain fetish? XD
though i did like inika matoro (his mask looked the best), naparu (he has a gun for crying out loud) and hahli (acceptable mask desing). no problems with hewki, he's just there like all the other stone toa. the game bionicle heroes made the inika use guns instead of melee weapons (idk if they did use melee weapons, i haven't played it but it mostly focused on gunplay) which was a nice change of pace for the new christenedΒ toa. with all that said i always loved the idea that the matoran we've known since 01-03 becoming toa. lightning powers? cool. power rangers almost.
these mocs are quite good. the best of both worlds and you did them justice.
the fact that jallers (or rather lhikans) hau turned into...well, you know, i kinda always thought it would turn back into lhikans great hau design.
hahli's mahri design looks WAY better with white and light blue. the seaweed green just looked yuck.
kongu's mask is what i disliked the most. too frowny. i liked his mahri mask more
nuparu, well you got rid of his punk rock mask and kept his gun weapon so, im happy with it.
hewki, again, had no problems with him.

Out of all the toa sets in these two waves, Jaller Mahri was my favorite. Mainly because of his pet hanhah crab.

Uh... actually, the way Lego does thing is to design the sets first, then write the story. The Mahri don't have a scuba theme because they were designed before the story was put to the sets. If anybody had suggested adding one, it would have been a little late- the toys would already be partway through production.

Exactly. They saw the sets and knew they had a scuba motif going with the toys. WHy then they did a total 180 with the story and made them water-breathing creatures boggles my mind to no end.

I like how you combined the best bits from Nuparu - oddly enough, while neither of his canon Toa forms seemed to quite work, your combination of them is PERFECT in capturing his inventor personality. He seems more "brains" than "brawn" (unlike his Inika form), and his technological-looking Volitak, laser drill and shoulder Zamor all seem perfect for the character. Bravo.Β
I'm glad you got rid of that god-awful Garai, though I think that Hahli's sleeker-looking Inika torso was much more fitting for a Toa of Water (or any female for that matter) instead of the awkward-looking Piraka one they used for her Mahri form. TheΒ Faxon IS a huge improvement though, needless to say.Β
And Jaller... well, what can I say?Β I freakin' love that you brought back Lhikan's mask, as well as his yellow-and-red color scheme. Honestly, one thing that always irked me about any character that was re-released as a Toa was that their Toa form dropped any unique color scheme their original form might've had (with the sole exception of Matoro). So good job on that with Jaller.Β It's a shame they don't have a lot of compatible orange or teal pieces; I'd like to seeΒ how Nuparu or Kongu would if they had some subtle callbacks to their Matoran selves hidden in their Toa color schemes.
Overall, nice work!
By the way, the Toa Mahri are now apparently freed. So that's one dangling plot thread that's been fixed. ^^

1. I think the Classic Hau fits better, considering Jaller's Hau was Lhikan's and looked that way all the time in his Matoran years.
2. I don't have Lhikan's set. I'm still flustered about that.

I love your idea, I really do, but I have one not so teency problem with it. In your story the Mahrinika still have their powers infused with lightning, yes? Well, that means that if the Mahri used their powers in Mahri Nui and the Pit, they would have electrocuted everyone in a close proximity, including themselves. Other than that not so tiny problem, I love the idea!!!
π: 0 β©: 2
DragonAssassN7 In reply to Narfoxousman [2014-01-18 00:02:41 +0000 UTC]
Well, I'm sure they had the power to control their lightning, and thus not electrocuting everyone in sight. But you do have a point there.

In my imagination where they were siply adorning new armor instead of transfomring into the Mahri forms, they took them off in the Toa Terrain Crawler and got them back when their mission in Mahri Nui was done.

Andrewnuva199 In reply to ChrisTheBlue [2013-03-23 20:19:06 +0000 UTC]
The whole idea behind these mocs is based on a diversion from canon where the Mask didn't make them the Inika the Mahri, so their Mahri forms were an alternate set of armor, and their Inika traits of lightning powers and the like were retained. Then after the Mask of Life business, they mixed & matched their Inika and Mahri armor to create what you see here.

ChrisTheBlue In reply to Andrewnuva199 [2013-03-23 20:22:35 +0000 UTC]
Well, they did mention that they suddenly had new masks, weapons, and armor after a flash of light created by the Mask. Also, the reason that Matoro wore a mask that was normally worn by Makuta (the mask of Reanimation) was a test from the Mask.

One of my main problems with the Toa Mahri (story-wise), was that they took everything unique about the Toa Inika and got rid of them. That said, each wave of sets had its own pros and cons, and while I still wish that they more closely resembled their Tohunga selves, you did a nice job of merging the two waves.
Although, I daresay that Mahrinika Jaller looks a little like Golden Armor Tahu would if he were Inika-scale.
I was about to ask, "Where's Matoro?", but then...

I like both the Inika and Mahri.
things I liked about the Toa Inika:
1)head mold/shape
2) laser weapons
3)the pearl silver chain link pieces
4)the armor (the feet were okay)
5) the zamor shooters. They were better than those thornax launchers.
The things I like about the Toa Mahri:
1) better-looking masks (in my opinion)
2) the hose pieces
3) the cordak blasters
4) the armor and the various feet molds (more use for them)
5) the silver weapong and the minifigure versions that were in the set which came with some sort of creature
