Description Back in the fall of 2009 or so, the Myst series became my latest obsession. I came to play and love every single one of them by the following winter. From the wonders of Riven to the trials of J'nanin, to the luring sights of Spire and Haven to the tranquil beauty of Eder Kemo, right up to the grand caverns of D'ni.

I went through countless puzzles, went up agantist vile and clever emenies for the sake of Atrus and his family, saved civilizations and preserved some ages while having to escape others. And they were all part of a grand adventure I enjoyed to the end.

What makes the games great can be factored to several things. The music, the story, the history, the characters, the puzzle design, or perhaps just the sheer look of the Ages traveled to in the games.

Out of all of them, the original Myst Island stands out as my favorite. In my room, you will find a Linking Book replica and LEGO recreation of the Library that shows how much I love it. It's an abstract and surreal place, yet it's tranquil and pleasent enough to enjoy a stay on. It's worth not only playing Myst to see, but also worth tracking down realMyst to see it go through day/night cycles in live-rendered 3D...

...and to wander the wrong way in the finalie, Myst V: End of Ages, to see. As beatiful as it may be, the tragedies that you learn have unfolded there leave it a haunting reminder of destruction and loss for its owners, which push them to leave the Age to start anew in a new home, letting the island to rot and suffer from the elements.

But I do not blame them, and not only because they're fictional characters. As sad as it is to see in this state, the "Ruined" Myst Island still has some beauty to it, one that is worth the visit to despite netting you a bad ending in the game you can reach it in (unless you use third-party programs to access it in the offline version of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst).

An abandoned land, cast under an everlasting storm, slowly letting its monuments of manmade (or D'nimade, in this case) return to nature has always been something of interest to artists of landscape, and Myst serves as a nice spot for this. It lets the island go out in a shower of beauty, a final swan song, one could say.

So here, I let deviants know that I two am part of the small fandom of what is one of the legends of video game franchises, and pay tribute to the island of mystery that made it all possible.

Naturally, this wouldn't be complete without some music: [link]

And of course, the ending has not yet been written...

Impressive. How did you come up with a view like this? And btw, I have a picture here that's my first shot of a mod I plan to make to mimic Myst Island in Half-Life 2 [link]

It's due to a mod I picked up for URU Singleplayer that allowed me to mount the Myst 5 maps and use noclip.

Don't get the wrong idea from all my GMod photos. This is taken straight from the Myst games.

I can probably rip the map if someone wanted to make a recreation over a static model in hammer (or create a collision model and make a prop map - eeeh)

Faved. Neat! You know, if you wanted to, you could design levels for Myst online--they made it freeware.
