Description

Ya just get unforeseen consequences all over the place.

So then, let's talk recent releases. The Friendship Games movie…

…Huh. Maybe it’s the post-movie hype that people say is the reason why The Phantom Menace got pretty good reviews just after it premiered, but this feels like the best film in this whole Equestria Girls saga. I am just feeling very enthused over what I saw in this picture.

I think a lot of this has to do with the human Twillight and the spanner in the works her little necklace brooch energy-capturing device OF SCIENCE threw into things. There was just something so thrilling and amusing at how she basically stumbles full force into things, it really shows how out of her league she is, both with the magic stuff and her own peers. It starts with her having a basic hang of things as she prepares to go to the school to being shocked and horrified at the power she’s wound up unleashing. It’s an idea that’s especially made visually metaphorical at the climax. As it often does, unlimited power does a hell of a number on ya. It also reminds me a lot of how things came about at Black Mesa in Half-Life, which might be why I've been bingeing on the Black Mesa: Source soundtrack recently and imagining how well its tracks could fit over scenes from this film. And why this is the image I've attached to my reaction to the film.

Also, maybe it’s a legacy of my nutty ideas of Dr Who/MLP crossovers, but I loved that her uncontrollable magic-containing device was opening dimensional rifts all over the place. It was such a sci-fi esque concept that I loved seeing included in the clash of Twilight’s scientific approach and the magic of friendship ideals usually associated with MLP.  It created some fantastic imagery for the climax and made for a rather fun scenario for the writers to provide an excuse for Spike’s voice actor to come back in for this film (Goddamn, that doggie seemed really endearing in a way this time around. Maybe it’s just the fact this time it’s a dog that’s always been a dog. That, and I think I’m fonder of Spike’s voice than I let myself realize).

Perhaps it’s also the fact I’ve been wanting to see them take the approach on the human world Twilight ever since she was referenced in the very first film. They kept people curious for a year before bringing back pony Twilight for the second, then teasing us at the end for this approach, so I’ve probably been subtly eager for this one for a while. Now in this film she’s finally here, and the exact sort of conflict that I wanted to happen did, and I’m all the happier for seeing it.

Of course, there were other good parts to this film. Sunset’s as good as gold in this film as the last. I’m not too fond of the costume change, but she’s really moving on well as a character, what with that whole arc of working independently of pony Twilight’s help, and works pretty darn well as a new lead character for this series now. I also like how subtly her interactions with human Twilight mirror those she had with the pony one in the first picture, which really brings the idea of things coming full circle with the trilogy we’ve gotten up to, especially with the finale.

In addition, the princesses in their human roles as principles and deans were great supporting characters, especially with human Cadence’s friendly role in spite of her Crystal Prep relation. Celestia and Luna really shine here after being sidelined by siren mind tricks last movie, particularly with how they deal with the peculiar nature of their “magical” school (I love how Cele handles the Crystal Prep principle and when she just gives up trying to understand the concept of two Twilights). It helps that the Cystal Prep principle (whatever her name was), by contrast, was so crooked and hell-bent on a good reputation that her wrist-twisting of Twilight’s role in the Friendship Games came off as delightfully despicable, and really pays off when she’s caught off guard by what she forces Twilight to do at the end.

Beyond that, the human “Mane 5” (as they’re being called now) weren’t too prominent due to their sideline roles, but they still got across the traits of their other selves well enough to remain a join to watch, and it’s cool to see them master “Pony-Ups” (heh, that’s one way to describe it) beyond musical instruments as well as warm up well to the human Twilight. Flash Sentry had a few good scenes, and I wish he could’ve gotten some more interesting bits, but on the other hand that might’ve ended in some lackluster toy ship moments, so it’s probably for the best. The other Crystal Prep students are somewhat forgettable (besides the Pinkie-esque one who’s always curtly saying things like it is), and their “always-winning” schtick is a bit overbearing, but they make a good contrast for the stronger community at Canterlot High, and the overall Friendship Games competition makes for a fun watch that makes more sense for high school settings than a random music festival. The music number for the first event is really fun to watch play out. A shame we couldn’t see the final one play out, would’ve made for a fond reminder of watching the last round of the old Supermarket Sweep gameshow.

Oh yes, and naturally the post-credits scene was a great funny moment. One does wonder what Twilight said implies for the main show’s season finale. I’m frankly not sure what to think of its implications.

So yeah, I’m pretty much very happy with how this film went. I’m seriously wondering if I should buy the DVD or something, it felt that enjoyable. Vortessence help me.

So, essentially, Human Twilight's contraption started a Resonance Cascade.

Heh. And told me the films don't take place in the real world...

And another thing I must add:
I'm dissatisfied that we don't know ANYTHING about the whereabouts of the Human-World Sunset.  (Well, in the first EQG movie, when it shows the pictures of the previous times Sunset has won the Fall Formal crown, the first picture(the one where Sunset looks completely innocent) is probably of Human-World Sunset, whereas the second and third ones are obviously of Pony-World Sunset).

I personally would have liked a second post-credits scene of Human-World Sunset arriving at Crystal Prep...and she'd be dressed the same way Pony-World Sunset was in the first two movies.
(This would certainly explain Sunset's costume change: it's so we can tell the two apart!)

As for the pictures, I have the same theory. My personal one is that Sunset kidnapped her counterpart after it and then dumped her somewhere in Equestria.

WHOA WHOA WHOA! Wait up, assholes. How can Human World Spike talk? Last I checked, dogs can't talk-only humans.

Yep. Did a bit of trickery with its view model and the Advanced Bone Tool to pose it.

UNLEASH THE MAGIC... DO EEET

that was by far my favorite song in the movie, and the scene, while not terribly detailed(?) enough was cool in its own right. I am a huge fan of Tia and Principal tia is not exception.
