Description
Liberty – Life Size BronzeCommissioned by Royal Caribbean, my brief for this figurative piece, was to incorporate certain influences of the Eugene Delacroix painting of Liberty leading the French Revolutionaries to victory. The amusing outcome to this sculptural commission was that although she might have lead the French into battle, she couldn’t win the war against the American tourists, who felt she needed her nipples filed off as they might cause offence – Vive La Revolution!
This sculpture is one of my favourite pieces produced for the cruise line industry. The influence is early Art Nouveau depicted mainly in the almost abstract folds of her dress and the sheer dynamism of the pose itself, which reads well from all sides and is very monumental in its design.
It fascinates me how sometimes a sculpture just works from the outset and other times despite your best efforts it just misses. There is an element of luck in any sculptural endeavour and this piece, I think, is one of those lucky occasions.

You do Amazing work, I did a double take when I read "life size" a piece like this must cost a great deal and take many months to finish. Poor lady being punished for having nipples That cracked me up, nipple filing.

A lovely sculpture.
Imagine me shaking my head. Sometimes, I sob for my fellow Americans. Her nipples are just fine.
