Description
EDIT- To #Improvement-Club : I've been looking at this picture on my front page for WEEKS and it's been bugging the crap out of me. It's one of the first major Photoshop works I've done, and there's two things that bug me: my shading technique and my line thickness. I'm also unsure about the outstretched arm and its anatomy. I've been scouring and picking my brain to think of some way to improve the piece, but I'm at a loss. If you guys have any suggestions, I'd be most grateful!Holy balls, I don't know how I did this in two days but...
This is my submission to an art book organized by , as well as my submission to TokyoPOP's Sealand Contest. Combining two submissions in one for the win.
I tried out a really new way of coloring and shading for this picture, so I hope it's adequate. This is by new means as amazing as I could have made it, but I'm pretty proud.
I ALSO FRIGGIN' LOVE SEALAND. He's so damn cute. And I really want to be a lady of Sealand. REALLY. Originally this was going to be a picture (star themed, of course, for the art book) dedicated to D-Day and all the troops from every country that fought there. I might still do that picture, but this seemed a little more light hearted and
happy.
Added bonus points for the fact that my keywords are "CUTE AS BALLS."

It's a cute image, his face looks so sweet.
As for the shading.. you're pulling a bit of a A-type it looks like [link]
I'm guessing the lighting is all coming from the stars straight above? But you'll also have the moon out (or other light sources), so chances are you can give direction to the light which might make it more interesting.
Also, you can play around with shadow color, you can use cooler hues for shadows and warmer for highlights.
The outstretched arm could be rounder, less oval shaped (for example look at his sleeve).
As for the lines, try playing around with line weight.
Your submission in the book.. was it flipped differently? >->
I remember seeing it differently.. XD

Thank you so much!! I'm CLEARLY going to have to look at this tutorial and mess around with things. And I never even thought about giving cool or warm tints to the shading! I did a cool layer for the whole piece, but that's a great idea! Sounds like it'll add much more depth.
And holy crap I just realize how flat that arm looks. Thank you for pointing that one out! I'm going to have to go in and do some red line tests on my original file.
To be honest, I'm not sure if it was flipped differently. That's a good question. I'll have to look at the file. It might've been slightly resized? Clearly I haven't checked out the book more than once.
Thank you again for your input! I SUPER appreciate it!

You're welcome!
Yes! Color can add a lot of depth, and it's great fun to work with.
There are a couple more tutorials running around about color if you feel like looking for them. [link] is the only one I have handy, but it's a good resource too.
You're welcome! It's fine, sometimes you just need someone to point it out before you can notice.. that happens to me all the time. XD
-shrug- the copy of the book I was sent had your picture flipped.
You're welcome! Any time.

Pen tool is sorta like my lazy cop out, but I'm likin' it! And the water was a bitch. I'm glad people can tell it's water.
