Description Stamp message: I block the Comment Box for: "Adorable," "Cute," "Great job," and "KAWAII!" Please stop typing that.

What can I say? The stamp speaks for itself.

Let’s face it. I have seen myself (or maybe you too) draw for more than enough hours and after all that time and effort I finally upload my art feeling confident on my accomplishments. But wait, what's this? What do I get? Not even the first five minutes I get the vague and/or "one-word" comments. I don’t know why but this always seems to bother me; it feels like most of my watchers don’t really care for what I draw or those who don’t watch just don’t care. Whatever their case this lack of attention staggers me. The feeling of discouragement astounds me. The continuous one-comment (and vague) compliments made me lose my confidence to drawing; I began to draw less and less— and I'm not even near the art block.

Most artists love to see comments that will make one laugh, think, and laugh again, or both. Others' favor critiques, and those will vary with person to person— only a few accept critiques; an artist improves by commenting constructive thoughts and suggestions; be creative with your comments and/or be thoughtful, or be funny and/or creative.

However, this stamp isn't really about me and my art; I actually have a good friend of mine— who is a far better artist than I will ever be— who receives vague comments on her art. I swear, she spends so much MORE time than I do— from a few days to even over a week on piece of art— and after all that time she receives is the “one-word” comment on her art by her own empty watchers. I do love her art as it is my personal favorite style; she draws breathtaking pieces of art (both digitally and traditionally drawn) with so much time and effort put into it. And yet it is unfair to her that nobody seems to comment anything better on her art. I began comment on her art that she submits from time to time. From here I do write my longest comments (that I always do enjoy) for her.

Now, I'm not saying you have to go comment long ass comments. She doesn't mind if a comment is only one sentence long. But just the one-word comment really deprives a few. Don't you see that? I feel like they don't care about our art. And they only leave a comment to show that they "care" for it.

After all, and above all, this is DeviantART. Aren't we all supposed to comment longer comments about the art? Never mind, things have changed after a while. Just that one word, ONE WORD COMMENTS, do not help.

I had seen more opinions pop up recently, a fave is different in my opinion. At least you FAVE it; you like what you saw. But think about this! You FAVE it is like you commented and left. Remember, you will forget what you favorite and move on with your lives.

And so, again, the stamp speaks for itself -w-

If you were to draw your own art then you would understand.

Not really.

If someone thinks my art is not worth a fav/comment, then I would understand, since I do the same.

Well, I'm speculating, but I'm not a child.

This is usually why I refrain from commenting unless I have more than one word to say about something. A fave basically says the same thing as a one-word comment in my eyes, and the comment box reserved for a specific thing I want to say.

That is exactly how I feel. I hate giving one word comments, and often, I have trouble putting what I like about a picture into words. So by faving, that lets me tell an artist I really like their art, but without sounding redundant and bluntly short.

I don't mind when people fave my art or place them into their collector folders. But then I have a hunch that grew on my back; a horrible feeling too, like once favorite they won’t remember it at all. And speaking of the stamp, the one-word comments feel like they comment once, fave it once, and they let the art rot.

Once they come back to their favorite's folder and see my art, what will they say? "What did I comment there? Oh yes! I typed in KAWAII!"

Yes, Kawaii! The most overused and abused Japanese word that should be arrested and lynched :C

It depends on what kind of person the favorite-er is. Some people fave madly (like myself), others fave very sparingly. I personally love going through my own favorites to remember art I liked. Some people don't do that. You can't really know why some people fave or whether or not they go back to look at their faves.

I'm confused. How does "Wow! What a great piece of art!" mean any more than "Cute "? I'd say they're both equally shallow and neither show the artist that you actually like the piece more than the other. Adding a few extra words while saying basically the same thing isn't showing you care any more, both are overly generalized compliments that you could write on almost any piece. I'm not going to pretend I'm super awesome at commenting or anything, I just think that anything that could be said to anything on here without even looking at it is shallow. If you want to leave shallow comments, don't complain about the shorter, equally shallow comments.

Really I don't care either way. I don't care if I get one word comments or no comments - the two are relatively equal to me. Now a critique or any comment that tells me you actually looked at the piece would mean a lot more. If you're just going to leave a simple compliment, it could at least mention something you liked about the piece. But really, it doesn't hurt anyone if someone just leaves a one word comment - it takes a second of your life to either thank them or delete it.

Tell me.

How long does it take you do draw your own art?
If the answer is long, well then, your watchers should comment a longer comment then.

I spend much time coloring just one piece of decent art and all I get is the lame one comments from people that they generally over-use. Overused words get tiring over time. So, as for "complaining about it" I don't complain about it; I just stated an opinion on a stamp. Also, I don't reply to the one-word comments anyways.

If you like their art, download it and/or fave it. That's fine by me. But, please, just don't leave a one-word comment on my art; it's a horrible and lazy way to compliment ones art.

You haven't told me how your example comment was any less shallow than the one word comments are. That was the thing I was most curious about.

The truth, as sad as it may sound, is that no one owes us comments. Regardless of how many hours any of us may put into a single piece, it needs to be something we do for ourselves - with the exception of commissions, requests, gifts, and the like - or else there is no point. People will either say something or they won't.

Personally I'd rather have a one word compliment than a favourite and I'd rather have a favourite than the nothing I get on most of my work. At least a one word comment made them take their hands away from mouse for a few seconds and type a few letters. A favourite just requires clicking a button or dragging a picture to a collection.

Angrymonkey2489 In reply to LittleAlienGirl [2012-01-28 20:36:34 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, I just see it like the one-word comment feels really lazy on their side. I mean, they see the drawing, fave and comment and leave. Leave and never come back to see it again.

And for the record, kudos to you, the second part you are right. *The Truth*
For the most part.

But for me, I draw for my friends; send them gift arts of mine. However, I do end up caring on how much effort (and time) I put into a single piece. If I made a gift art I at least accept a "thanks" or "thank you" or something from my friend that I drew for. However, this stamp goes towards my watchers; I mean, don't you get tired of seeing "cute", "kawaii", and etc. at all from your watchers?

Why watch me and say that on my art? Why are they watching my art if they have nothing better to say? To me, the one word compliment is nice, but when you draw a lot and yet continue to get that it gets really old, really fast. I don't care if they favorite and comment nothing-- at least they see it. And another thing about the favorites, why bother favorite an art when MOST people will forget about what they faved.

Again, I like your opinion I'll keep mine ^^

OHHHHH TRUST ME!

I'm getting more one-word comments lately after I spend so much time and effort into drawings that I wish I can get more attention out of.

However, this stamp isn't really about me and my art; I have a good friend of mine who is a far better artist (more than I will ever) who recieves the one-word comment on her art. I swear, she spends so much time-- from a few days to even over a week-- on piece of art and all she gets is the one-word comment on her art, by her own watchers. She puts so much detail, effort, and time in her art that to me it was breathtaking. I do comment on those who have breathtaking art that I like; from here, I do write my longest comment (that I always do enjoy) for her.

Now, I'm not saying you have to go comment. She doesn't mind a comment that's only a sentence long. But just the one-word comment really deprives a few. Even when you one-word the comment box it really shows that -that- person didn't care for what they saw; here's my example: "Wow! What a grat piece of art!" Leaves "CUTE" for a comment and and moving on with life.

Don't you see that? I feel like they don't care about our "crap" art. And they only leave a comment to show that they "care" for it.

After all-- and above all-- this is DeviantART. Aren't we all suppose to comment longer comments about the art? Nevermind, things have changed after a while.

Well obviously this makes sense (considering I can get one word comments too on something that took me forever to complete) but I agree with MasterPlanner, if your going to be drawing something adorable or just plain cutesy you should expect those kind of comments from them.

This is deviantART. What do you expect? The majority of the community is like this. xD

I agree about the time-wasting comments! This mostly happens at my school, though. People will go to the trouble to disturb me during drawing to tell me that I'm good at drawing. Really, people?! Well, I'm glad that the last 9 years of my life (that I was some-what serious about art) weren't wasted -_-

And "kawaii desuuuuu!!!!!!!!111one" gets on my nerves, too. If you're not Japanese, don't have any Japanese reletives or aren't talking to a Japanese-speaking person, then there's no point
