Description As your body grows bigger
You mind must flower
It's great to learn
'Cause knowledge is power!

50 years ago on this day, the Disney animated series Schoolhouse Rock! premiered on ABC. While not having an overall story, this series is merely about teaching us important school topics in the most entertaining way possible: through song! Each of the different subjects falls into one of the following categories: Grammar Rock, Multiplication Rock, America Rock, Science Rock, Money Rock and, most recently, Earth Rock.

To this day, I still remember my first experience with Schoolhouse Rock!. It was in my elementary school days. My class (I forgot which grade I was in) was learning about the multiplication table, and my teacher decided to pull up a Schoolhouse Rock! video. The video that introduced me to the world of this show was called "Figure Eight", which talked about the multiples of 8. After that, my teacher pulled up the episode prior to this one, which was titled "Lucky Seven Sampson", which talked about the multiples of 7. Ever since then, Schoolhouse Rock! has not left my mind since, as its approach to teaching its various subjects was highly enjoyable.

Because Schoolhouse Rock! was such an integral part of my life growing up, I knew I had to celebrate the show turning 50 years old. Fun fact, it was around the afternoon hours where I learned about the show turning 50, and I didn't start working on the artwork until the late hours of the day, the main reason being that Splatoon 3 is hosting another Splatfest, this time being Spicy vs. Sweet vs. Sour, and I wanted to play until I had to put my Switch on its charger. For this artwork, I decided to do something I never thought I'd do: have there be a placeholder image until I finish the artwork. The reason I did this was because the date of the anniversary is January 6, and for some reason, I didn't want to publish the artwork the next day because of how the anniversary date and the publishing date don't match. So, to remedy that, I decided to upload a placeholder image so that the published date reads January 6.

Now onto the artwork!

As you can see from my artwork, it's just as simple as it looks: the mascot of the Schoolhouse Rock! franchise, Rocky, holding the giant number that represents the milestone age, while being surrounded by some of the most iconic characters in the show.

From left to right, the featured characters (minus Rocky) include:

-Zero from "My Hero Zero", which talks about the multiples of 0
-The magician from "Three Is a Magic Number", which talks about the multiples of 3 (which was the premiere episode)
-A cheerleader from "Interjections!", which talks about interjections, or words that express strong emotion
-The figure skater from the aforementioned "Figure Eight"
-The conductor from "Conjunction Junction", which talks about conjunctions, or words that connect phrases, clauses or other words
-Bill from "I'm Just a Bill", which talks about the lawmaking process
-Sarah Suffrage from "Sufferin' Till Suffrage", which talks aboutΒ women's suffrage and the women's rights movement
-Interplanet Janet from "Interplanet Janet", which talks about the planets of our Solar System (because this episode premiered while Pluto was still declared a planet, it can be seen as a bit outdated)
-Lolly from "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here", which talks about adverbs, or words that modify adjectives or verbs
-The telegraph delivery boy from "Telegraph Line", which talks about the human nervous system

Dedicated fans might have noticed that I didn't feature any characters from either Money Rock or Earth Rock. This is because I consider the other four categories, Grammar, Multiplication, America and Science, to be the original series, and therefore, the characters from those categories have more familiarity to them. For those not in the know, the series was created and aired during the 1970s. The Money Rock episodes were produced during the 1990s (where they're considered good, but they don't have as much familiarity), and the Earth Rock episodes were released in 2009 (which are literally forgotten; nobody ever talks about them).

Like any artwork I've made that involves me drawing a certain cartoon, my goal is to try and replicate the art style as closely as possible. This means also trying to copy the same shading techniques. In this case, I had to draw a lot of lines on the 50 to represent shading, where the closer the lines are bunched together, the darker that area is. One last thing I want to bring up is the grainy filter. Like with some of my Cuphead artworks, I wanted to try and replicate that feeling of old film, so I decided to give the artwork a bit of static to emphasize how old this cartoon is, and that is used to play on TV back in the 70s, which we all know was when TV wasn't exactly as pristine as it is nowadays.

Hope you enjoyed my dedication to this musical show. Also, apologies if anyone was weirded out by my idea of posting a placeholder image. To cap things off, I'd like to ask, what are your thoughts on Schoolhouse Rock!? Do you have a personal favorite episode/song?
