Description
Another one of my Visual Arts 3D projects. In order to prove to our teacher that we can sew (a little silly in my case, but oh well), we had to each make a plushie. I went a little overkill... ^_^ I've never made a plushie before in my life, but I like how he turned out.I didn't actually paint it at first (and it was tinted blue from the pen I used to mark the felt), but I painted it for sale at the Mom's Weekend Craft Fair to benefit the Raptor Club. It's pictured with the little info card that it will come with, with bonus drawing by the artist (pfft...).
You don't really see a whole lot of realistic owl (or bird, really) plushies, so here we have a barn owl, vaguely based on Widget , one of the birds I work with. He's such a cutie.
Anyways, this plush is more of a display piece than a toy. His wings and legs are wired so that they are somewhat poseable, but I'm not so sure how he'd hold up to a lot of handling.

I mean... That owl just happens to be a barn owl, and so is this one! This plush was based on a barn owl I used to work with named Widget! It was sold as part of a charity auction to raise money for wildlife rehab (nothing to do with that movie).
(Widget's got his own webpage here, if you're interested: www.vetmed.wsu.edu/outreach/ra⦠)

I would be willing to make one, and it would be $45 + shipping. You would probably have to wait a little while, though, because I have a few other people on my waiting list before you. Would that still be alright?

EE! Someone else who's made their own barn owl plushie!! (I was so frustrated by the utter lack of realistic barn owl plush that I started making my own pattern a year ago for one. He is half done at the moment, but getting there quickly!).
Ok, I'm not a premium user so I can't critique apparently, but here goes anyways;
I think overall he is a little "rough" looking (but, as this is your first plushie, that is to be expected to some extent). I think part of this roughness is also due to the fact that he is made of felt- which is by no means the easiest surface to try to paint (trust me, I've tried). Overall, I think if you got more practice making plush and made him out of something other than felt, he could look absolutely incredible! As is, I still like him a lot. And I'm so jealous of you getting to work with a real barnie.

Ooh, when he's done, please send me a link! I'm constantly seeing really unrealistic bird plushies, and I would love to see yours. ^_^
Unofficial critiques are also much appreciated and just as useful, thank you! Huh... What kind of fabric would you suggest? I know what fabric to use for clothes, but I know zip about plushies.

Ok, my owl is all finished (except for two toes lol).
I'm not sure how to post links here, but let's see if this works: [link]
If it doesnt work, just click on my name and hit up my gallery- he's in the Labyrinth folder if he's not still on the main page.
*still jealous you get to work with raptors* lol

Yup, he did. He was purchased at the craft fair where he was debuted, and the proceeds went to the Raptor Club. I'm working on another one (and a corresponding tutorial), too.

My university has a veterinary teaching hospital, which is home to a raptor rehabilitation program and the Raptor Club, which takes care of some of the non-releasable birds that go through the rehabilitation program.

Hm... Are there any rehabilitation programs in your area? If you ask nicely a lot of times they'll let you come out, if only just to help normalize the birds. I hope you get your chance!

Yeah, I've written to one clear up in Wisconsin, it'd be a four hour drive I think, but worth it in my book. But they won't write back.
Another one only a half hour away, but since they knew I'm donating to the other rescue, they politely said I should contact them. *shaking my head* it's just frustrating.

You might just have to keep asking- sometimes things get lost in the system. Maybe call, or go and visit and ask to speak to whoever is in charge.

Lol, this is really the blind leading the blind here. I'm working on my first plushie (he's not furry material, so I would really call him more of a soft sculpture).
I've made quite a few dragons for sale on my site, and for those, I generally use cotton quilting fabrics, and occasionally a velveteen type fabric backed with cotton for a stripy soft belly.
I tend to stuff things pretty firmly, so I like the cotton because it doesn't stretch when I pack critters up.
I've got some half-way finihsed shots of him in my gallery at the moment, will do good shots once he's done.

Oooooh, I absolutely adore how you went all out and did an actual structure for the wings rather than lifeless flaps.
Gorgeous.
Although, from the back, the coloration actually reminds me of a lobster. Hahah.

Thank you!
I noticed that most owl plushies don't look anything at all like owls, and I have some very friendly inspiration named Widget that I get to work with all the time. So I thought I'd do something a little cooler. ^_^ I'm really glad you like it!
That really is what their coloration looks like, though. Widget likes to give me a face full of wing all the time, so I'm definitely 100% certain of that!

I don't have much planned at the moment- I'm doing a tutorial for this plush, a hat on commission, and a few cosplays. I'd like to do more plushes, but I lack inspiration. Did you have any ideas?

Rekul13 In reply to Animus-Panthera [2010-08-15 23:53:21 +0000 UTC]
That sounds like a couple of things planned.
Or do you mean, specific plans for plushes? Heh, I'm not sure, although I'd love to see you explore more winged figures though.

Thank you! I'm glad you think he's cute.
Well, he's not quite like the owl in Harry Potter, but most people have that reaction. ^_^ Although both are white, Hedwig is a snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus), where this little guy is a barn owl (Tyto alba). Snowy owls are very big birds (much larger than barn owls), but even so, lots of people mistake barn owls for snowy owls.
