Description A couple of people have asked me how to drape patterns, so here you go.

This tutorial is intended for advanced sewers- if you don't have a good basic knowledge of sewing and of using patterns, you will probably not be able to do this!

I also suggest you buy a book on flat patterning- in many ways, flat patterning is considerably harder than draping, but there are lots of good books that demonstrate the basic shapes of common garment pieces. They can be pricey, but well worth it!

If you don't have a dress form! There are two relatively cheap ways to make one-->

-The very cheap way- have someone tape cast your torso with duct tape (basically, wrap yourself in plastic wrap, then cover it with tape. Cut it off, then stuff it with newspaper or some other stuffing and tape off the openings.) There's some good tutorials for this here and here .

-The less cheap way- this way will last a bit longer and work a bit better, but is more expensive than duct tape (still cheaper than a dress form, though). Buy one of those tight-fitting sports shirts, sew patches over the openings, and stuff. Make sure that the measurements when stuffed match your measurements! This may require fitting the shirt more with darts or extra seams, and stuffing it quite a lot.

Please let me know if there's anything I can clarify!

[EDIT: Someone asked that I also cover flat-patterning sleeves, so here you go: sleeves ! This is a very basic sleeve pattern, but for most things, it'll work just fine.]

Also look, stuff patterned with this tutorial! -->

I don't have a dress form but could I do something similar with a model and very careful use of pins?

You can, I've seen it done! Just be VERY careful, it sucks getting stabbed with pins. It's a lot like fitting a garment, actually. If you look at the artists' comments, I also have a few suggestions for making a cheap dress form, if you can't find a willing volunteer.

This is amazing, thank you! I look forward to actually draping a pattern in the future - looks like this will save me some cycles of flat patterning/tailoring/argh/repeat.

It'll be quite a few months until I get anything finished, sadly, since I'm without a sewing machine until the end of December. ;-; If I use your tutorial then, I'll let you know, for sure

I can't sew cloths but watching the designers on project runway pin fabric to dress forms and suddenly have this garment certainly made me wonder what they were up to - and how on earth it was supposed to work and thanks to this I see how they did it

Thanks

Ah ha, yeah! I actually watch Project Runway while I drape and sew sometimes... Heh! I learned to drape about a year and a half ago from a costumer I know, except she was considerably less helpful. (She basically just said, "here you go, a dress form! Have at" and left me to my own devices. She did answer a few questions when I got stuck, though, so I guess there's that.) It's slightly possible that the designers on that show are also just making the garments on the forms (basically the same process, except you skip the pattern part and just cut the pieces from the form- risky business, that), but I'm not sure.

That sounds like a difficult way to learn something *that* comp0licated.
Wouldn't catch me doing that.. ever lol

Well, I've been sewing for 10 years and working with her in the shop for over a year- I'm sure she wouldn't have done that unless she knew I could handle it (especially considering I've seen her actually teach other people).

By chance will you be making a Tutorial on sleeves? or have a good resource on making them?
I can pattern them to save my Life! <3

Animus-Panthera In reply to Brodys-Babe [2011-10-20 07:04:01 +0000 UTC]

There are some good books on flat patterning that have the shapes for all kinds of sleeves, but basically a sleeve is a bell curve. I can do a little quickie something on sleeves (not tonight, but maybe this weekend), but I am no expert on the subject of sleeve patterning, so I don't know how much help I'll be...
