Due to popular demand, a tutorial for making your own pair of spats, part 1! This is how to make a base pattern, using draping (a patterning technique). If you plan on making a bunch of spats, you can keep this pattern for future use, too.

I've never made a tutorial before, so if anything doesn't make sense, just ask and I'll try to explain it as best I can! I've been sewing for a long time and sometimes I forget that some things aren't obvious to everyone, so if I left out anything, feel free to call me out on it.
I didn't take pictures when I made the spats in the first place, so there aren't a lot of pics. Part 2 will probably involve a lot of drawings, but I hope it'll still make sense.
Oh, and this is what a seam allowance is, if you didn't know.

why is stretchy bad? i have this epicly badass cloth and it's stretchy... maybe it would be good to know what is bad about it so i can avoid the badness thanks!!

It's a little hard to explain, but basically fabric "lays." Stretchy fabric will not always lay the same (because it stretches), which makes it difficult to work with, and it generally does not look good. It is possible to make something like spats look okay with stretchy fabric, but it requires a lot of expertise to do. Also, stretchy fabric is more likely to rip seams.

i have started the spats with the stretchy fabric, but now i will have to put the lining together. learning more during this project is great. i'll show you the finished product when it's finished!

You're welcome. Just be careful with that stretchy fabric- make sure it is not stretched when you sew, or else things will not line up properly. I'll look forward to seeing them.
